Safeguard Young Athletes’ Health

July 25, 2013

It is not uncommon these days for high school football players “shaken up” by hard hits to sit out several plays, or even the rest of the game....

I am all in favor for protecting athletes and vets, but what about the general population. Media is always addressing head injuries among athletes. One athlete shot himself in the heart so his brain could be tested to show that his behavioral changes were a result of head trauma. Many people get head injuries each year and we do not understand the effects of it. We do not tell them or families what to watch for besides the obvious. Mood changes, blank stares, risk taking, anger, impulsiveness are just a few of the things that can occur and that go untreated. Seems that sports are most important though. Win-win

It's about time! But put some teeth into it. Not speaking about head injuries' but years ago and maybe today, when a player was injured, gime him a couple shots of pain killer, take him out for a few plays then put him back in the game. Did I say "Game"?? Today, it's Win, Win, no matter what the cost.

This is long overdue. All concussions/head injuries should be taken seriously. Unfortunately, even the ER Drs. provide no referrral or follow up instructions for those who come in with concussions. "if you have any problem, follow up with family dr." Early detection and treatment for head injuries should not be limited to pro football and military. There is a free Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic in Morgantown-most do not know about. Just because it does not look severe (coma, bleed, etc) does not mean that it will not be life altering. We need much more awareness and local professionals who are knowledgable.
