When word of the new dog park gets out, thousands of people will relocate to Wheeling to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Better start building some new homes now before the big influx.

"I missed one important thing I forgot to tell you, "If everybody on here is fat, then that's like saying Obama is a great president. Catch my drift?" Cherokee.

Based on the article picture, three of the individuals may be characterized as "obese". Two others are overweight, but within a range that does not necessarily threaten their health as long as they eat right and exercise. Two persons appear to be within a "normal" weight range. The fact that they are walking their pets is a positive sign. Exercise definitely reduces the likelihood of weight related disease regardless of body mass. Nonetheless, excess weight ultimately is a killer.

fatboy, we already have a cat park. It's right next to Wheeling Island Casino. It has a nice track for your cat to do some laps to get some good exercise. Just toss it over the fence, and when kitty gets a good workout he can jump right back.

@whgfeeling.I have never had a problem with dogs, but $25,000.00 for a dog park? It could have been put to a better use. The first time someone is bitten they will go running to their lawyer looking for some easy money. As for most people you say are haters is because they are overweight is an asinine statement, how about all those people lose weight and you go to a plastic surgeon and get fixed up because I believe you are "Ugly?" Give me a "H3ll Yes" if you agree folks.

First of all...congratulations to all who made this happen..this is positive for our community.

I do have questions. Will this be added as a city responsibility concerning maintenance, clean up, and liability (insurance)? Is there a volunteer citizens group? Rules and regulations? Open and closed times?

The proposed land needs some work before a fence can go up. Installing a fence is more costly than most might think. It cost me $1000 to install a fence on one side of my small yard. Water fixtures will be costly as well. We would like to add some agility equipment and other things for the dogs. Everything will be paid for by private donations and fundraising. The city will maintain the park by cutting the grass.

This is fantastic for the city! An ordinary citizen found this contest and nominated Wheeling. A small group of citizens trying to raise money for a dog park put together a campaign to get the support of the public. It worked and Wheeling won $25,000 for a dog park! It is beyond me how anyone could have a problem with this.

Has the City given any thought on the annual cost of maintaining the park?

Hey congrats to all for taking the initiative and effort to make it happen. There should be a requirement though that all dogs must be licensed (verified through Ohio County Auditors - maybe start putting a scan bar on the back of the dog tag) and vaccinated. One bit kid and the lawyers will swoop in!!! LOL Way to go dog lovers I wish you all the very best!!

What a joke! The $25,000 ias just the beginning. After the fence, they will need some nice grass, a place for them to rest and if it rains, a shelter to keep them dry. Whats wrong with back yards and what they have been using?

Although this article does not detail the plan, most "dog parks" consist of a large fenced community play-interaction area with dog sizes separated. ( not just a place to poop, and owners do comply with clean up) There may also be trails, wooded areas and maybe a simple obstacle course. ( thus the award amount ) It's a playground for dogs. In a city-county area that has many challenges it's nice to see people come together to create a positive community activity that did not exist before. They also did this without taking money from the community, and it boosts spirits. That said, those attending need to beef up - ha - on their dog's social and obedience skills or prepare for a vet bill from a fight incident. Some dogs love to play well with others, some ,.. not so much. I wish them luck with the project.

Although, I will add. Since when is a dog park considered a place for them to poop? The ones that I have been to have trails and fields to exercise dogs. A dog friendly area.

Totally no hate. I've been wondering from the start: How the heck does it required Tens of thousands to erect a fence around some pro property so people can take their dogs to poop? $25,000 to do that? Yup, makes no sense to a town so short on so much. In Washington, Pa. they built a dog park in a county park, cost nothing but a fence and it's huge. Glad they won.but can't wait to see how they blow $25,000 on dirt and a fence. Just say'in.
