I see your point and the farmers don't want to pay a lot for a house call.

Oftentimes, farmers of cattle, horses, etc. learn to treat their animals themselves just to avoid the vet call, too. Somewhat the way it used to be. But these days, kids want the easier track and that is usually doggies and kitties.

Laws are not too strict. You have to choose in 2nd or 3rd year which "track" you are going into. Small animal, Equine and Large Animal. (Sometimes Equine is separate.) Small animal vets make more money, can close up the office at 6 pm and refer to an emergency clinic, and take vacations more easily, since they can get someone to cover. Equine vets are fewer and emergency calls are a certainty - horses often have issues at night (foaling problems, colic, etc.) causing the vet to have non-typical hours.

Those are certainly big shoes to fill and a dying breed. Maybe they need to change some laws so interns can volunteer and get college credit towards a degree for hrs worked in the field. After all even if the actual vet can't be there communication with an intern over the phone or a computer if internet is available could be key in saving or helping a sick animal. Just saying..maybe the laws are bit to strict on who can and who can't.
