Just out of curiosity I checked to see what $15.00 per hour in today's dollars would translate into in years past given inflation. In 2000 it would have equaled $11.06. In 1990 it would have equaled $5.29 today. In 1970 it would have equaled $2.49. In 1960 it would have equaled $1.90, and in 1950, it would have been the same as a $1.55.

@BigMike is exactly right! Get an education....work hard....and claw your way up the social ladder.

Flipping burgers was for after-school jobs for kids and old widows in past years. Now, it's for layabouts and illegals!

Triton: "Maybe the best example for young people is to see that those who did not value education, don't earn very much money or do anyting interesting. The idea that we can make putting a hamburger togeher is job worth a great wage is more Obama pandeing to the stupid. So the people in the attached picture have this idea that even though they tanked high school, do drugs, spend time in jail that its all OK if you can get someone to print a sign and hold it up that you can "earn" a better salary for your deadend job. Get an eduction, get a skill, serve n the military, go to work and work you way into a professional or trade. Fast food is not a treasured career and raising the wage for those kinds of jobs just raises prices. We already paid for you, for sittig idle in shool for 6 yrs, for sitting in jail, for filling up gov housing, to feed your kids, for your health care. Get real dude. "

COOL!!

Too many people + Not enough jobs = Low wages.

So by all means lets increase immigration levels and bring in millions of low wage workers.

Another unintended consequence of the welfare state..

Of course Valley Hypocrite Wonderlies uses all contract employees (1099) and pays NO benefits, yet run her dimwit mouth all the time about other business!

ZERO percent of Wonderlie "employees" get bennies.

I am self employed. I contract companies to do work for me. Guess you are against small business thought, since you only support the far right that wants corporate AMerica(sic) to get all the breaks at the hands of small business. You really should consider moving to China. Tin foil and all........... :)

"In 2012, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind contributions around the world. This includes $1 billion in cash and in-kind gifts in the United States and $82.2 million in cash and in-kind gifts in international markets. In addition, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Logistics associates volunteered more than 2.2 million hours, generating $18 million to U.S. nonprofits. "

I'm sure Cluelass gave more . . . .

clueless: "WALMART pays its employee's so well that they give them classes in HOW TO OBTAIN GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE . Thanks for contributing to the welfare class"

Didn't I hear somewhere that the Obama administration is setting up government programs to tell the poor how to receive additional government benefits.

Are you implying that Obama is contributing to the welfare class also?

I completely understand Liberals wanting a higher minimum wage! When your policies create mainly minimum wage and part time jobs its your only play!

Of course, liberals hate Wal-Mart for one reason and one reason only-it is non-union and proud of it.

You see, liberals can do their own calculations in their deluded little heads.

1.5 million employees x $100 in union initiation fees equals $150 million, minus 10% to the mob family controlling the SEIU or some other union and 25% to the union "training" center (union president's mansion) and the union still makes out okay.

Now add $50 per month in union dues to the mix and the union will be really happy.

It would be such a huge money maker for LCN that it would rival the Concrete Club or the Gas Scam.

Wal-Mart, as a corporate entity, paid $8.7 billion in income taxes last year.

It also paid payroll tax matching (Social Security/Medicare) for its US employees.

Assuming 1.5 million US employees x 24 hours per week x 52 weeks per year x avg. of $9 per hour = $16.85 billion in wages. Of course, this number is actually much higher.

$16.85 billion x 0.0765% = $1.29 billion in payroll tax contributions.

Also, billions in property taxes, hundreds of millions in charitable contributions, 2.2 million US supplier jobs supported, hundreds of millions in utility bills and local taxes and $4.5 billion in dividends.

Finally, even Warren Buffett has written that Wal-Mart saves working Americans tens of billions in purchase prices each year.

Combine all of these things, subtract, say, $1 billion for infrastructure that ANY large employer would get and the taxpayers still come out tens of billions of dollars in the positive column.

UNCOMMONSENSE

Fast food jobs were NEVER intended to support a family or live like a gangsta rock star!!!

These jobs are for TEENAGERS who have no job skills yet and RETIRED people looking for a little extra cash or something to do!!!

If you want more pay, then find another job or work MULTIPLE jobs!!!

As somebody who HAS worked up to FOUR jobs in order to pay the bills, these lazy bums make me sick!!!

the first question that should be answered is why is Terrance Wise working two minimum wage jobs in Kansas City? Are there no other employment opportunities, or does he not have the skills to get a skilled labor job?

If Terrance's only skills are flipping burgers and delivering pizza, instead of walking out on the available jobs, maybe he should consider training to improve his potential to get a higher paying job.

But then again, maybe it's just the Obama quantitative easing, economic program, and its resulting improvement in the job market.

Forbes: "The answer to this conundrum is of course that WalMart’s profits are NOT being subsidised in this manner. It is the lifestyles of the employees which are being subsidised: and rightly so. And they should indeed be subsidised by taxpayer money as well.

It’s a sad fact that some people simply don’t have the skills to make a living in this society of ours. The truly incapable for example: and we do all think it right that we chip in a little bit of our own incomes, through the tax system, to aid in taking care of those who simply cannot take care of themselves.

Forbes:

So Let us, just for a moment, assume that this is true. That the existence of Section 8 vouchers, the EITC, Medicaid, subsidised school meals and the like (all of which the report mentions) means that WalMart’s labour is subsidised. For WalMart can get away with paying such low wages only because the taxpayers chip in.

THE OBVIOUS RESPONSE TO SUCH A SITUATION IS THAT WE SHOULD STOP PAYING SUCH SUBSIDIES SO THAT WE STOP SUBSIDISING WALMART’S PROFITS. AND I REALLY DON’T SEE ANYONE AT ALL OUT THERE SUGGESTING THAT WE SHOULD DO AWAY WITH SECTION 8, THE EITC OR MEDICAID.

Here is the report that cough cough COUGHY cited:

"The report comes from the Democratic part of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Prepared by the Democratic staff of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workfororce(sic)

No, really, that’s what it says on the cover. Clearly, WalMart’s rapacious pursuit of profits has left Congress with insufficient funds for a spell checker*.

BBBWHAHAHAAHAHAH! I guess COughy is spending so much money by NOT shopping a WalMart he can't afford a spell checker either?

• We offer eligible hourly store associates quarterly cash bonus opportunities, a health care plan that starts at $17 per pay period, a 401k plan with a company match, a 10% discount on merchandise, and, most of all, a chance to move up through the ranks.

So how much are taxpayer paying for SOLYNDRA employees?

Their payroll is ZERO, they stuck the American taxapyer for 1/2 BILLION in loans, and 100% of their employees were OR STILL ARE on unemployment!!!

So just WTF Benefits are the taxpayers paying???

From Walmart Cororatate:

We employ 2.2 million associates globally, including approximately 1.4 million in the U.S. In fact, every time we open a Walmart Supercenter in the U.S., we provide roughly 300 jobs with good pay and benefits and the opportunity to advance.

• About 75% of our store management teams started as hourly associates, and they earn between $50,000 and $170,000 a year — similar to what firefighters, accountants, and even doctors make.

• Every year, we promote about 170,000 people to jobs with more responsibility and higher pay.

We project that we'll hire more than 100,000 veterans over the next five years.

Benefits Walmart offers competitive pay and benefits, including health care plans, education assistance, retirement plans, and training and development opportunities.
