What is the problem? What do you think elected officials are doing?

Power is a corrupting influence and often those doing it never even think its a bad thing because they are the law now. About half of those seeking public office are doing it to help the town, others openly just want to be in power for power sake. Small town gov positions are not very rewarding in that there is so much pressure to become a gang and exploit the power. An awful lot of small town council positions are filled by Type A personalities, usually not people working in professions and a college degree is seldom found there. There are unending stories of councilmen wanting their driveways paved on the city, threatening neighbors or businesses with retribution and there always seems to be someone who thinks because the police serve under the council that they are police officers too and try to arrest people. Toughest job is the city attorney who has to deal with inflated egos and morons in office with a total of 10 votes who wants to invade the next town over.

Much of government dysfunction can be traced to lack of knowledge of city charters, state ethics and Sunshine laws. Too many ordiances at the local level are passed for the favor of a few. Too many power hungry elected officals are interested in the power and gains for a few but forgot to read the rules and represent the people. Even the ones with a college education are even more prone to do the same just look at Congress.

Too many elected officals and appointed in the OV believe the public is not to be informed but should go along with the council rule of indoctrination, manipulated and mislead. Try using a FOIA request and watch all the fancy dancing of the people that were elected to represent the people but want to conceal and mislead the people when it comes to money , wages and contracts with a city.

Could this be happening in a lot in the cities in the OV. Instead of trying HOME RULE or a new city charter they should be reviewing ethics from the bottom up and how public meetings are handled and they should encourage FOIA request to insure government is working for the people rather than trying to hide it from the people.

Council cannot hire theirselves. But, can they have contracts with a city or sell insurance to the city or sell or lease any of the many items a city uses? Maybe the time has come for an audit of our local city governments for the people.
