Here lies the problem: The original business model for these places was not for workers to make "careers" out of these fast food jobs. The jobs were intended to be for high school and college age students as their first jobs much as paper boys were originally for 12-15 year olds. Look how that occupation has turned out now. Blame who you must, but the unintended consequences for these lifetime burger workers is not a good one if wages are doubled.

Why no mention of the pay at the top? If fast food cannot pay a living wage, why can it pay top executive millions of dollars a year? CEO is over $12 million a year. So that is ok and won't raise fast food a cent yet paying the workers a living wage, well, it just can't be done. Plutocrats just love this.

Hoopie you Union tool idiot, back in the day, "minimum wage" was often called "starting wage". It was designed to let UNSKILLED workers, like students and young people, get their foot in the door and GET SOME EXPERIENCE so that they could MOVE UP in the world.

After governments got involved and jacked the rates UP, it started becoming the PREVALING wage in industries.

If you raise the minimum wage, here is what will happen:

1) There will be massive layoffs of min wage employees. Employers will only keep the best and hire BETTER workers.

2) Black youth unemployment, already 48%, will go even higher. Who is going to give poorly uneducated workers with NO experience a break now.

3) More ELDERLY white retired workers will take a part time job to make extra income to supplement Social Security.

So you are the employer, are you going to hire a retired white guy who worked 40 years in industry at a responsible position or some baggy-pants jerkoff?

A little off topic, but Droopie, explain this: I have been working in the Detroit metro area and there is a fascinating commercial running on the two big AM talk radio stations, WWJ and WJR.

It is attacking the wows of Obamacare, claiming it is the END of the 40 hour work week, it will hurt the working man, it is horrible. Please contact your congressman and senators and tell them NO on Obamacare.

Here's the thing- they mention NUMEROUS times that this is paid for and endorsed by James Hoffa, the UAW, UBEW, and other MAJOR UNIONS in the Detroit area.

Teamsters running commercials on the Station that airs Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and Levin bashing Obamacare.

I'm guessing the unions see employers hiring people part time <30 hours so they are exempt from EMPLOYER coverage and hence cannot Unionize them either????

What these kids don't understand is that job PAY is directly tied to job DEMAND

Since fast food workers are literally "a dime a dozen" their wages are ALWAYS going to be at the bottom of the wage scale

If however you live in an area where the gas industry has taken most of the local workers out of the hiring pool, fast food chains and retailers are then forced to pay competitive wages in order to get workers

But as always if you don't like the pay, then either get another job or work two or three jobs to make ends meet

It's simply the same ole lazy bunch that expects to get rich and live like MTV rock stars WITHOUT working hard or putting in the years

You've got to be kidding me. "fight for $15"? When I finished by B.S. and started out fresh from college I made $14.50 an hour in a science related field. I worked my *** off and kept looking for jobs higher up the ladder. I bettered my situation because I wasn't satisfied with where I was and I didn't do it by protesting or striking. These kids and fast food workers have esentially given up and settled for the bare minimum. I would be embarrassed.

Hoopie calls for a "living wage" but also wants taxpayers to subsidize union insurance plans. Liberals think they have a right to "other people's money". Personal accountability plays no part in that mindset. Creating a villain and playing either the class or race card is basic strategy!

For the business-economics challenged:

One measure of an INDUSTRY is the gross profit per employee.

Intel makes $579,000 gross dollars per employee in the high profit semiconductor business.

McDonalds makes a mere $15,000 per employee, one of the lowest numbers of any publicly traded company.

Just sayin, Fast FOOD is NOT the pharmaceutical or drug or Google or high tech business.

As others have said, Fast Food is LOW SKILL and pays LOW. DUH!

Semiconductor business is super high skill and pays HIGH.

Here is another interesting fact I have NOT HEARD ANYWHERE.

CEO of McDonalds gets $8.75 million. OUTRAGEOUS pay for a rich white privileged 1 percenter???

UUUUUUUUUH here is the rub. The new CEO of McDonalds is Donald Thompson, an African American.

He grew up two blocks from the Lincoln Park housing project in Chicago, so he is FROM THE GHETTO.

His first job was working at KFC for MIN WAGE!!

BUUUUUUUUUUT he got an electrical engineering degree from Purdue and worked for Northrup Grumman eventually getting into management.

So he went from MIN wage in the GHETTO to $8,750,000 plus perks.

I can understand the liberals push for minimum wage increases. When your policies create mainly minimum wage jobs its the only play you have to make!! From MSN Money, "Even worse, part-time work has contributed 77% of this year's job growth. With the Affordable Care Act going into effect in January, some employers such as Regal Entertainment Group (RGC -0.83%) have cut back hours as a way to avoid the mandate to provide health care insurance."

Thanks Obama (care)!!

Dr. King got it:

"In life, if it falls ever your lot to be a street sweeper, you must sweep streets so well, in fact you must sweep streets like Beethoven composed music. Sweep streets, he said, like Shakespeare wrote poetry, sweep streets like Raphael painted pictures, sweep streets so well that all the hosts of Heaven and earth would have to pause and say, here lived a great street sweeper, that did his job well."

He didn't say

"In life, if it falls ever your lot to be a street sweeper, you must strike and protest for higher wages and more benefits for less work"

If these workers would use half the time they spend protesting looking for a better job, this wouldn't be a conversation.

Alright,if you work at McDonald's you work in the food service industry. Not only that you work at the bottom of the food service industry. How about going across the street and work as a server at a sit down restaurant? There you can earn tips above and beyond your wage. Do an excellent job you can double your salary from McDonald's. If you do a poor job you better stay at McDonald's because you will starve. The minute McDonald's has to pay fry cooks $15 an hour will be the beginning of the end for the fast food industry. Hmm, on second thought maybe it is a good idea.....

Sep-02-13 9:01 AM are exactly right. It seems as if there are mistakes all the time. Once in awhile it is understandable. @dawraith, I agree with you also. When I walk into some of these places they act like they are doing you the favor by waiting on you. They need to be taught manners. Just remember, your skill set determines where you end up in life. I would hope they are striving for something more than flipping burgers.

idliketoknow, When 70+% of all the "new" jobs are part-time where do you suggest that these people "go" for better wages?

Did the coal miners of the 50's get a better wage because they were great street sweepers?

fast food jobs are not career jobs and trying to make them pay as that is just part of the "rich guy rant" whats yours is mine idea. When you go into a McDonald's you see three types of workers, those working for money to go to or stay in school, seniors and women supplementing their householld or retirement pay and lastly, those who have no job skills or any history, don't want any and are only working until they can get enough time in to lay off. Thinking that putting a piece of pasty meat between two buns and wrapping it in paper is a job skill is silly. One reason that fast food like McD's seek out senior workers is that they will come to work. Coming to work in America is now an important job skill. Fast food workers need to consider getting a skill other than frying if they want to be paid a wage the same as someone who has a work skill. Equating the pay is modern America Obama economics. Pay is reward for work. Messing up your life has consequences.

dyingov, you should probably be asking why 70% of the new jobs are part time....figure that out then come back. Obamacare has a few magic numbers you may want to know about.

And I think you missed Dr. Kings point entirely.

By creating such controversy the folks who raise the ruckus are demeaning themselves and the workers at fast food restaurants. Probably many who carry the posters and shout so loudly don't even have a job. There is pride in having any job and respect is due to the folks who work in that industry, but every job has a value ceiling and that has to be recognized. Do you have any idea what a McDonald's franchise cost? I'm sure top performers at fast food restaurants receive just compensation. I've also been served by many who don't deserve the minimum wage.

idliketoknow, I get the Point of Dr. King's message.

I do however find it interesting that "jobs" are credited to politicians. It is not the job of goberment to create jobs!

hefner, You need $300,000+ liquid funds to start for a McDonald franchise. Most own multiple stores, they have an area where they have first dibs on a new or existing (owner selling) stores. So even if you have the cash you might not have the opportunity.....
