Standardized testing was introduced by the Johnson administration (the US was very vulnerable when Johnson was President) in 1965 and has been reauthorized every 5 years since.

The Inmates are running the asylum.

The question should be what is best for the education of the children? Push them to perform better or just pretend that social promotion is the norm for under performing schools??

"Tucker Richardson" in the story better hope he grow up to be 6'8" and be a heck of basket player because if he DOES NOT, he is going to get his a%% kicked by his fellow students who parents recognized the importance of education.

A future welfare system recruit!

It is not stereotyping when it says in the article that he was skipping school and playing basketball. What a lame way to pull the race card.

Obviously the parents don't want to know how dumb their children are and how bad the teachers are. The bad parent's shield is the mantle of self-righteousness,and their effort is terribly misplaced. Instead get involved in the PTA, volunteer as a teacher's assistant, help with the kid's studies, set an example, reduce TV and computer game time, go to school board meetings, and quit being a jerk.

Why even have grades? It's too much pressure and separates the successful kids from the mouth breathers. It's amazing the lazy attitudes in American education from the parents to the teachers and adminstrators. Always the path of least resistance. Some parents ask almost nothing of their kids during the developmental years and then act shocked when they are 30 years old living in the basement covered in Cheetos dust.

Like a conveyor belt the system is set up to funnel kids into college, saddle them with big debt and then the job situation: 1.nepotism 2. low paid except for the very top 3. incremental learning and hands on experience can teach factual skills whether in a classroom or other setting 4. hopefully people are starting their own businesses including farming and small manufacturing.
