It is true there will be no more coal power stations. It is also true many existing coal stations will close. This is reality.

Now what do the Legislators propose for new value added employment. Clinging to the past is not going to do it; and has not in Wheeling and WV.

atoddh, you forgot about exports. Coal mining will continue, because coal exports will continue to increase. Manufacturers in foreign countries will continue to use our coal to produce goods at lower cost, and will continue to undercut American manufacturers. Manufacturing jobs will continue to move overseas, and the American trade deficit will continue to widen.

Anti-coal loons, you built that.

Several things: Carbon Dioxide, the big bugaboo here, can be reclaimed and profitably recycled into liquid hydrocarbon fuels, alcohols, and plastics manufacturing raw materials. The Icelandic company Carbon Recycling International is converting CO2 into methanol that's being blended into gasoline in Europe. Bayer Corporation is capturing coal power plant exhaust CO2 at a pilot plant in Germany and using it to synthesize plastics. Saudi Arabia has just signed a contract to construct a major factory that will reclaim CO2 emitted by petrochemical plants and convert it into methanol and into urea, which can be used either as a fertilizer or as a building block for certain polymers. We are not being told of the options, or given the opportunity to use them.

Further, the US Government owns technology that, even using environmental energy to drive the processes, collects CO2 from the environment and converts it into liquid hydrocarbon fuels. We believe the latest example is: "US Patent 8,436,457 - Synthesis of Hydrocarbons Via Catalytic Reduction of CO2; May 7, 2013; Assignee: The USA, as represented by the Secretary of the Navy; A method of: introducing hydrogen and a feed gas containing at least 50 vol % carbon dioxide into a reactor ... to produce hydrocarbons in the reactor ... wherein ... the carbon dioxide delivery system extracts carbon dioxide from seawater (or) wherein the carbon dioxide delivery system extracts carbon dioxide from air. The method involves the reaction of hydrogen and carbon dioxide using a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst to produce hydrocarbons. The carbon dioxide feed gas contains at least 50, 75, 90, or 99 vol % carbon dioxide". We are just not being adequately or appropriately informed.

Even further, Germany's Volkswagen is now reclaiming CO2 from a biogas factory and converting it into substitute natural gas Methane. One news release: "Audi E-Gas Plant Uses CO2, Renewables to Make Fuel". explains that: "Audi is building an industrial plant in Werlte, Germany, which will use renewable energy and carbon dioxide to make synthetic methane fuel". Moreover, Japan's Panasonic has developed a complete set of similar technology, one example of which is disclosed in: "United States Patent 8,414,758 -Method for Reducing Carbon Dioxide; Assignee: Panasonic Corporation (Japan); Abstract: A device for reducing carbon dioxide ... with a light having a wavelength (as specified) thereby reducing the carbon dioxide ... . The method ... wherein ... methane is obtained". We are being victimized by Carbon taxes because of our ignorance, and some people apparently like it that way.

WVUGEO makes a good point. We could simply burn all the coal, then convert the waste flue gas to snake oil. Then we could burn the snake oil, and convert it’s waste flue gas to even more snake oil. Eventually we would be the snake oil sheiks of the world, and all our energy problems would be solved. For free. And it wouldn’t add one dime to the deficit...

Don’t laugh. It makes more sense than Obamacare...

I have an idea for a mobile CO2 sequestering unit which would capture all of the CO2 exhaled from each mammal on earth. This unit would contain green plants to utilize the CO2. I am awaiting a grant that would allow me to work out the problem of providing sunlight for the green plans when indoors, and how to maintain the correct moisture for optimum plant growth.

I think this unit could be scaled up to sequester the CO2 from mechanical sources such as automobiles, power plants, etc.; if only I could get a grant.

I think Mother Nature has already developed this system encompassing the entire earth, but if it wasn't patented, maybe I can beat her to the draw.

But wait, remember the old TV ad "You can't fool Mother Nature."

So the new mantra for WV unions is to embrace the crushing of WV and "don't cling the past" where your jobs were located, embrace welfare and poverty, its the progressive way. Love that, "don't cling to the past". Well if coal miners and power plant workers were dumb enough to vote for Obama then maybe they should be extinct. It is true that European science has developed a process to reclaim the C02 ands actually turn it into something. We will not be doing there here. Our role in the Obamanation is to not cling to the past and just go on and starve. Love political chants. Dance to that *******, you are part of the past. Now lets trash the natural gas industry too and turn the state into a wildlife preserve (actually suggested by a progressive). Instead lets send TWO GOP SEnators to D.C. so the National/International Democratic Party understands we are not clinging to our stupid Dem voting past. Lets make them work for our vote by representing us. No more mi

True greenies should go out and buy some swampland, leave it like it is and pay property taxes on it to support the local government services that they all enjoy.

No...Instead they will donate this property to a tax-except environmental group and require the remaining county citizens to support the public services that the greenies enjoy as they visit the site to study bugs and frogs.

anutter, to provide light to grow the plants indoors you could burn plants. This, of course, would use up more plants than it would grow, but since we’re operating on Government grant money that’s only a minor inconvenience that surely can be improved in the next grant cycle.

You may not be able to fool Mother Nature, but you can fool grant funders by putting the word “green” in the project title.

Troll;

My first thought was to name my product the "GREENSACK PORTABLE CO2 SEQUESTER UNITS" but I was afraid the some Lib reviewing my grant application would overlook the word GREEN and see SEQUESTER, thus putting me on some watch list. ;)

anutter, just substitute "renewable" or "sustainable" for "sequester" and you have a winner. Don't worry - it doesn't actually have to be any of those things. Just look at the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act." The only true words in that title are "and" and "Act."

I don't understand the libbies' opposition to the word "sequester," considering the sequester was Obama's idea. Libbies seem to be very conflicted souls.

Trollslayer .you got me... I was laughing before I got to where you said don't laugh... and speaking of Obamacare along with the Feds QE.. How long will it take before the official Govt. inflation numbers go into the minus..Ms. Yellen on tap to be the next Fed Chairman, chairwoman. Has already stated she thinks that interest rates should be negative. Which means that if you are a saver, banks will be required to charge you up to 5 % per year for you having money in their bank... and no you won't be able to take the cost off your income taxes... Banana Republic? well Obama, yes you can ..

troll: The reality is: WV mining is on the decline. The unfavorable Fed policy is set now on coal. Also much of the WV coal has been mined out. WV can not depend on coal going forward; or gaming. Many layoffs have already occurred in Southern WV. Electing Capito and McKinley-both juniors-is not going to change things. They have little power. The coal issue is being used for self promotion by them vs real ideas for WV's future.
