I always feel a bit sad when I see old washed up former Movie/TV stars reduced to gigs at stores and car lots. Guess they made bad investments or had too many marriages turn sour.

I remember Smiley Burnette, who looked not well, appearing at 'Easy Ed's used car lot' on the River Road. I was a big fan when I was a tyke but seeing him really turned me off.

Shirley Jones may be old, but she’s been busy doing work in movies and TV non-stop since 1950. At age 79 she worked in four TV series and a movie in 2013 alone. Washed up? Hardly. But if criticizing her fame and professional and financial successes makes you feel better about yourself, rover, good for you. LOL

Seeing Shirley (Lazarus) Jones reminds me of the John Prine song "Quit Hollerin At Me" which starts off: "I don't want your big french fries, I don't want your car. I don't want to buy no soap from some washed up movie star. You are so much louder than the show I want to hear. What's all this gee are you dumb, sugarless gum, non-alcoholic beer?"

I think it speaks volume to the snowball's chance Wheeling has to ever recover when their big story is about a department store in another state 30 miles away from town and how so many Wheeling people actually waited in line to be relieved of their hard earned money at a store that will never pay a solitary tax dollar into Wheeling treasury. Stick a fork in our behinds, it is over with.

Sara, Boscov’s is only 10 miles from Wheeling, so you’re only 200% off. Who’s John Prine? He hasn’t released a new song in 8 years. The NR publishes news about the entire Ohio Valley, not just Wheeling. Maybe those Wheeling city taxes are driving businesses elsewhere? Strike four and back to the bench, slugger. Come back out swinging with more ideas, actual facts, and less “the war is lost” whining. LOL

daTroll - Man, you must have failed third grade reading. I did NOT criticize her past successes. I said I think she is another ancient geezer who has been reduced to appearing at store openings in East Bummfooke, Ohio and such.

I wouldn't pay a quarter to see her swim from Pittsburgh to Powhatan toting a barge of coal!

I am sure the irony in troll slayer being the biggest troll on here is lost to him. I am thinking his vehement defense of that old lady stems from some adolescent, pubescent fantasy involving her when she was like 80 years younger and he was still able to perform.

No the irony is twelve year-old Sara babbling about adolescent, prepubescent fantasies. Come back when you can legally buy that liquor you're stealing from daddy's cabinet, child. LOL

liberal rover “ [Shirley Jones] is another ancient geezer who has been reduced to appearing at store openings in East Bummfooke”

liberal Sara “Seeing Shirley (Lazarus) Jones reminds me of...some washed up movie star...”

Seniors, these hate-filled liberal loons want their “progressive” Government to take control of your health care. Sure, they’ll see to it that you “ancient geezers in East Bummfooke” get all the health care you need. Sorry, the Death Panel says it’s “take a pill” for you, Shirley. Since 79 is “washed up, ancient” and all. Stay classy, Dems. Represent your party well, rover, Sara. LOL

Rover: Jones is very appropriate in age and circumstance for a front page event in the OV. She fits.

I noticed Cafaro lent the money to open the store 'and presumably pay him rent(with his own money.)

atoddh, "down and out"? At 79 she's STILL working in Hollywood. YOU do better. LOL

I was thinking a classy, successful, attractive, grand old dame for the grand opening of a classy, successful, attractive grand old store. But I’m more the glass half full type. And there's nothing wrong with that. LOL

troll, honey, A & B list Hollywood folks would not be doing this in a C/D list rate, out dated mall in the almost defunct Ohio Valley. Get real. This is the dregs. Jones must be desperate for cash. A "Sunset Boulevard" case.

Our Ohio Valley Mall made the C-List? Woo hoooooo!

And Shirley Jones must be desperate for cash? Call the Enquirer, atoddh, and give ‘em the scoop. Being an unfounded-gossip queen I’m sure you have connections. LOL

Regarding all of these stupid comments about Shirley Jones. No, she doesn't need the money. Good friend of Mr. Moscov, yes. And she happens to be from just east of Washington, Pa., home town girl and does come home on occasion.

Having grown up in western Pa, I have always had a soft spot for Mrs. Partridge. She lived in my hometown for a time and grew up in Smithton, where her father ran Stoney's Brewery.

Those of you who have never had the "pleasure" of drinking Stoney's and have trouble keeping regular, should check it out.

One of the best laxatives known to man.

Shirley Jones does not need the money. Unlike today's "stars", who buy "bling" and "cribs" with borrowed money, most Hollywood celebrities from back in the day invested their money in real estate and blue chip stocks.

Greta Garbo was worth $20-$30 million when she died and she never earned more than $100,000 for a movie.

If YOU were a celebrity, though, and some mall owner offered you the chance to return to your area and hang out at a store opening for $25,000 or so, and you weren't too busy, why would you say no?

atoddh-your snobbery is showing through. This area was good enough to leave you an

I was referring to your inheritance from your granddaddy. This area was good enough to let him earn a fortune that you have no trouble spending. It is rather pretentious to sit in judgment on someone for working.

So what if she needs the money? She probably earned more from hanging out at the mall than most Ohio Valley residents will earn in the next year.

Nice work, if you can get it.

rag: not being judgmental; just very truthful and blunt; realistic.

When my family arrived here the City was growing.(one branch 1812;one 1914) There was opportunity; growth. They all made fortunes in their respective eras; as did many in Wheeling. This has reversed. Wheeling is at 1870's population levels now and on the way down; monthly. Take a look around.

As for Ms. Jones: The old stars take what they can get to survive.(as do the young ones on the way up.) I do admire her for this. Show Business is very cruel and tough; youth oriented.

Perhaps it was a "charitable" appearance: for a depressed area and a mall on its last legs trying to survive.

I would guess they paid her circa 2.5K plus travel to appear.

Sorry. I tell it like it is. Not PC.

atoddh “Sorry. I tell it like it is.”

No, you tell it how you fanaticize it is. Typical trust fund liberal.

“a down and out - over the hill - actress”? Prove that. Do you really believe Shirley Partridge made more per episode than Shirley Jones made in her four 2013 TV series? She’s earning her keep. You?

“Jones must be desperate for cash.” Total speculation on your part, just to make your own pathetic self feel better about the fact that NOBODY knows or cares who you are.

But don’t worry. I’m sure mommy and daddy are very proud of their little stipendiary. LOL

troll: If you think the Wheeling area is a growing healthy economy, it is you with the fantasy; not me.

I do not aspire to be an aging actor resorting to third rate store openings in depressed areas for a living. Do you?It is pathetic. "Death of a Salesman"- esque.

My comments are intended to agree with Rover's.

atoddh, now why would you change the subject from your bashing of Shirley Jones to your criticism of the Ohio Valley? Does my pointing out the fact that your ridiculous criticism of a 79 year-old, still gainfully-employed actress is unfounded, petty, and pathetic make you uncomfortable? Probably not, since you admit you’re “non-PC.” Non-PC in this case meaning unfounded, petty, and pathetic. LOL

SERIOUSLY-she has aged gracefully, is still a beautiful woman, and whatever her motivation for coming here, she came. Who cares what she was paid or if she was paid.

How long will Boscov survive here? I hear more people avoiding buying unnecessary stuff. There was a time when residents shopped for leisure-Im not hearing that now.
