Mike, thank's for stating the obvious! All-too-many children don't read, because the other members of their families do not read. It is self perpetuating. There is also an anti-intellectual undercurrent that flows through WV. Ignorance is considered a cultural heritage by all-too-many. The state of education in the mountain state is reflected by the general attitude towards science, environmental conservation and a host of other issues.
Would anyone like to know just how much of a hypocrite Mike Myer is? He worked a full time job. His wife worked a full time job. All of his children attended public schools and did just fine.
Myer's hypocrisy is another reason why this rag keeps losing thousands of subscribers every year.

Just about anyone can be a parent! When the parents were not taught how to read by the parents that raised them and the school system did not get them up to "level!" Now you think these parents that could not read to level should be teaching the reading at home? Cycle needs to be broken.
Most learning and learning styles are developed by the age of 6, just when they start into the public "system!"
