uglyassmf, The federal program is in trouble and will continue to be in trouble. Only about 12% of the buildings in a flood plain are insured (FEMA would go out of business if the flood plain buildings were insured) can't have that!

If you think that the homes on the coast in hurricane Katrina and Sandy were second home (beach homes for the rich and famous) you would be wrong!

BYW, the state program will do nothing!

Few companies sell flood insurance in the private market and only those rich and famous could afford to buy it.

I have a solution. Make it illegal for a financial institution to lend money to buy a home in a flood plain unless they wave the mandatory purchase of flood insurance on the mortgage. if you have the cash to buy a home on a beach front good for you. if your home blows over or gets washed out so be it. Nobody is paying to rebuild it but you.

I don't this really means anything. Its a "law" but it only encourages insurance companies to sell lower rates flood insurance. What does that mean? What kind of law just suggests that someone should do something about something? Sounds like a big feel good empty yippee. But the newspaper carried it as though it was a big deal, but was it? I read it, it seems to be like a resolution to honor the Cub Scouts, does not create anything real.
