The Holocaust was horrific. Keep in mind that there were several different genocides during the 20th century. The mass killings of millions by different groups of peoples usually in their own country. Usually prompted by some leader that promoted hate against the victims " because they were different somehow" The end goal of the so called leader was for them to gain power and money over others. Google genocide if you want to know what can happen in any country, once the masses stop thinking for themselves and follow their " leader"
