Whitetails Unlimited Aids Hunter Program

November 10, 2007
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register
TRIADELPHIA — The 1st West Virginia Mountaineer Branch of Whitetails Unlimited is part of the national organization whose mission is to raise funds to support educational programs, habitat conservation and preservation of the hunting tradition for the direct benefit of the white-tailed deer and other wildlife.

In Ohio County, Whitetails have consistently donated funds to further hunter education programs held at Cabela’s at The Highlands. Through various fund-raising efforts, Whitetails recently presented the hunters education program coordinators enough funds to purchase a laptop computer. The computer is used in the presentation of the various informational and education programs required before anyone can obtain a hunting license in West Virginia.

The local chapter of Whitetails Unlimited was established in December of 2005. Its first banquet was held in February of 2006 and attracted 375 people. The second banquet in February 2007 brought 450 interested parties to the event.

This year’s Whitetails Unlimited banquet is set for Feb. 23, 2008, at Wheeling Park’s White Palace. Tickets and information are available by calling Vickie Shaw at (304) 232-5407. Tickets will be available beginning in December.

Last year, the group was able to contribute $150 each to Marshall and Ohio county programs. This year, each county received $300 from the group. Whitetails Unlimited members also have presented programs on chronic wasting disease and wildlife habitation at Cabela’s conference room. They also handed out literature at the Marshall County Fair.

Among the participants in the hunters education programs at Cabela’s are Harry Croft, Jeff Shaw, Dennis Moore, Scott Ullom, Florence Croft, Nelson Croft, Matt Croft, John Smith and Sgt. David Shriner with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement.
