Destruction of murals shameful

February 9, 2008
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register
I am writing this letter to express my great distress and anger over the recent event at Brooke High School involving the destruction of decades old murals which once adorned the halls of this fine institution of learning. My children attended Brooke High School and those precious artworks were part of their memories as well as my own. The history and future of this tradition was one of the finest examples of Brooke High Pride. I cannot believe someone had the audacity to take it upon themselves, to destroy these time capsules in the halls of BHS. Every student, past, present, and future is effected by this loss, including the citizens of Brooke County. I sincerely hope, that this disgusting display of unchecked power will be dealt with swiftly and effectively, and those responsible are disciplined. In addition, I expect a public apology in the media to be made to the students of Brooke High School and the voters of this county. Making the statement that this episode is under investigation is simply a nicer way of saying that the Board of Education knows who is responsible, but are not sure how to deal with it! I hope that this is not simply swept under the rug and forgotten.
