WHEELING — Nationally syndicated columnist Cal Thomas will be the guest speaker at the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2008 Membership Dinner, chamber President Terry Sterling said.

The event is set for 6:15 p.m. May 14 at Wheeling Park’s White Palace.

Thomas writes a twice-weekly column appearing in more than 500 newspapers nationwide, including The Intelligencer. He is one of the most widely read and highly regarded voices on the American political scene.

Sterling said it will be interesting to hear Thomas’ insights into this year’s presidential election.

‘‘We are very pleased to have a speaker the magnitude of Cal Thomas for our member-investors, particularly given that it’s an election year,’’ Sterling said.

‘‘Mr. Thomas’ perspective on the presidential campaign will be much appreciated, particularly since he’s in Wheeling the day after West Virginia’s May 13 primary election.’’

A graduate of American University, Thomas is a 35-year veteran of broadcast and print journalism.

He has worked for NBC, CNBC, PBS television and the Fox News Network, where he currently provides weekly political commentary.

In 1995, Thomas was honored with a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Interview Program. Other awards include a George Foster Peabody team reporting award and awards from both the Associated Press and United Press International.

Thomas has authored 10 books, including ‘‘The Wit and Wisdom of Cal Thomas.’’

Thomas and his wife, Ray, who is a family therapist, have four children and eight grandchildren and live in the Washington, D.C., area.

For ticket information, call the chamber at 304-233-2575.
