Tyler Consolidated Graduate Killed in Iraq
By JENNIFER COMPSTON-STROUGHArticle Photos
“I was notified this morning,” Ron Ault said late Thursday. “It was a chaplain and another military personnel who came to the house, and they were very good. They don’t know what to do for you, either — they don’t want to make the visit.
“I looked out the window and saw them walking up the sidewalk, and you just get that thought,” he continued, his voice cracking with emotion.
Jesse Ault, 28, had been serving in Iraq with the Virginia National Guard for 10 months, but it wasn’t his first tour of duty there. His father said Jesse met his wife, Betsy, while both were serving a previous tour in the same unit. He was killed by a roadside bomb while traveling to northern Baghdad, his father said.
Jesse and Betsy Ault have a 15-month-old son, Adam, and a daughter, Rachel, who was born in January. Jesse also has a 10-year-old stepson, Nathan.
“He took Nathan in as his own,” Ron Ault said of Jesse. “They were just like a son and father.”
Ron said Jesse was able to come home for his daughter’s birth.
“That was the last time I got to see him,” Ron Ault said.
But it wasn’t the last time he heard from his son. Ron said Jesse called him at least once a month while serving overseas, and Jesse had made it a point to call Wednesday — Ron’s birthday — before leaving on the fatal trip.
Jesse called twice that day but didn’t reach Ron, who was in Pittsburgh with his wife, Jesse’s stepmother, and other family members.
“All I got was a message,” Ron lamented.
But Jesse also called Betsy in Virginia and had the opportunity to speak with his mother, who was there visiting her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Ron said he was grateful that his ex-wife and daughter-in-law both had the chance to speak with Jesse one last time.
Jesse was a graduate of Tyler Consolidated High School, where his father said he played football and baseball and “was an excellent student.” He said most of his son’s friends are from Middlebourne, where Jesse was raised for about 10 years.
Ron noted his son was on active duty in his wife’s place. After he served his first tour in Iraq, Jesse was discharged from the Guard. He took a job and settled in Virginia, where Betsy was from. Since Betsy still had time to serve in the Guard and was again set to return to Iraq, Jesse re-enlisted and took her place.
“He said, ‘Dad, I’ve got to do what’s best for my family.’ That’s just the way my son was — he would do anything for anybody.”
Ron said his son’s tour of duty was nearly complete when he was killed. He said his son’s unit was set to return to Virginia on Mother’s Day, May 11.

I support our troops, in that I hope they survive what they are being forced to go through. I do not support the cause because it is nonexistent.

E2 you are right I served my country. I have put on the uniform and I feel that I have paid my dues to the USA. I may not agree with what someone says but I put my arse on the line to defend their right to say it. THIS WAR is fought by poor young men so rich old white men can get richer.

Soldiers follow orders RIGHT OR WRONG they follow ORDERS. I support the men and women that FOLLOW ORDERS. I do not support those that give WRONG ORDERS. If this war was about ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS we would have finished the job in Afghanistan. There were no ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS IN IRAQ until we got there and they decided to come and fight. Have you ever heard the term INSURGENTS. Look up the definition and get back to me.

My condolances to the family of this fine soldier. littlebeavis, I also disagree with you. One can support the troops without supporting the war in Iraq. Only a GWB Koolaid drinker would think otherwise. So basically anyone against Bush is wrong in your book. You just keep believin. Getaclue is right. There is evil all over the world and our govt. turns a blind eye. It is all about this current administration. I may be mistaken but I would bet Getaclue has served in our great military. Thank you to all of our veterans. We hope you can all come home soon.

Only when our politicians children have to serve...Have you ever heard of John McCain. He's running for president and his youngest son just got back from a tour of duty in Iraq. this is not about Haliburton money - how can you be so naive. Its about Islamic fundamentalist but if you want to believe otherwise, go ahead. Just don't say you support the troops but are against the war. Because you can't have it both ways. Your saying I support you, now stop doing what your doing. That doesn't make sense. But if you want to kid yourself, go ahead. Sometime you need to take a trip to Washington DC to the World War II Memorial and see the huge granite plaque commemorating the thousands of Americans that were killed in World War II. The plaque is titled "The Cost of Freedom." But you probably think that war was senseless also. Your ideas are pathetic.

LITTLEBEAVIS..."And the fact that innocent people in Iraq were being tortured by Saddaam and his sons means absolutely nothing to you, just as long as order was kept. Exactly what was said during the slaughter of tens of thousands of **** in Germany. Will you ever learn -FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!!" First off the number of **** killed in Europe during WWII was 6 million. There are bad dictators all over the world, genocide in the Sudan. WMDs in Korea. The point is our troops go where ever they are ordered to. They are to be commended for their service and sacrifice. It angers me that they have to be deployed in this HALIBURTON MONEY GRAB. There is no end in sight and an all volunteer military is going to be a thing of the past. Only when politicians children have to serve will you see our boys come home.

While I do disagree with our military's current presence in Iraq, I do support our troops 100% and would like to tell Mr. Ault, if he's reading that I will be praying for him through this tough time. It sounds as though your son was a fine man, and I hope he is in Heaven with the Lord as we speak. I hope you take this as an opportunity to grow closer to the Lord yourself. It is through that closeness that you will be drawing closer to your son every moment till you make Heaven your final residence as well. Then you can spend eternity reunited with your son and the rest of your loved ones who wait for you there. God gives peace to those who mourn, and you WILL make it through this.

My sincere condolences to the Ault family. I knew Jesse when he was in high school and knew he would grow to be a fine man one day. Though the loss of his life is hard to bear for all, his committment to his family and his country can never be questioned. He will long be remembered for his quick smile, soft heart and good naturedness. Weather you agree or disagree with the "war", no one can fault the committment and diligence of our soldiers, doing their jobs, meeting their responsibilities, and wearing their pride on their sleeves. God bless, and Godspeed Jesse.

To houweb and getaclue: just what a grieving parent wants to hear - that his child's service was "for no good reason" and cost this country too much money. And the fact that innocent people in Iraq were being tortured by Saddaam and his sons means absolutely nothing to you, just as long as order was kept. Exactly what was said during the slaughter of tens of thousands of **** in Germany. Will you ever learn - FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!!

This is a heartbreaking story. My prayers go out to the Aults. We need to DROP the "rules of engagement" in Iraq. We are the ONLY military that wages war by rules. If our troops are approached they need the clearance to engage! Right now our sons and daughters are like sitting ducks. They are not allowed to engage a suspicious vehicle or civilian! This is war! Allow our soldiers to engage the enemy if the enemy violates our perimeter! Thank you to all our brave men and women keeping us safe! And thank you to all veterans for your service to our country! SEMPER FI!

Yes houweb there was no need or value in doing this as for example Senator Byrd tried to point out early on.It has made the situation worse for the US.Saddam actually keep order in Iraq and warned that a civil war would erupt(without him.) It will, however,be hard to withdraw easily from the mess we have created. It costs every US household about $100/month now to finance Iraq. The defense contractors are having a hay day.

Thank you for your service. We need you there. Stay strong, fight, win. If we don't win it over there, they will surely come here. I'm thankful for all our heros over there. Thank you for protecting our land, our buildings, our people, our way of life. These brave men and women joined. They are warriors doing their job. Fight on and WIN for your fallen brothers and sisters. God Bless the family and may they have peace of mind. This is not the time or place for some stupid political statement. I'm standing behind the troups. I'm standing by the mission. I'm ready to fight for the freedom of everyone in this country. Even houweb
