Road Race to Return to Shadyside

By MICHAEL SCHULER For the News-Register

The annual Shadyside Firefighters Festival could see the return of a road race after Lori Call pitched the idea of having a 5k run and walk as part of the three day event.

Call made the request during Monday's regular council meeting, requesting the race be held on the first day of the festival.

This year's festival is scheduled July 30-31 and Aug. 1.

Both Fire Chief Dave Lenz and Solicitor Richard Melanko said the festival has had similar races in the past.

Council then unanimously approved a motion to have the race, with the stipulation the race route be mapped and approved by police Chief Rusty Patt and Street Superintendent Don Cruciotti.

Also during the meeting, Lenz said the fire department's new ambulance will be delivered in early September. He then requested permission to advertise for the sale of the department's current ambulance. Council unanimously approved the request.

Lenz also said the department had 20 members who recently completed a hazardous material's course.

Under new business, Councilman Ray Ponzo said some members of the community have asked him if there could be a disaster warning signal similar to the emergency medical signal. Specifically, Ponzo said the request was for a tornado warning. Lenz said the department could work on the request.

Also under new business, Councilman Tim Merryman said he has been approached by alumni of Shadyside High School who want to see the village incorporate activities to coincide with "Alumni Weekend" activates, such as a festival with vendors near the Central Avenue median.

Absent from the meeting was Councilman Bob Doris Jr. who is on vacation.
