Kitten Captures Hearts at City-County Building
By GABE WELLSThere's an unusual sound coming from the Municipal Court Clerk's office in the City-County Building - the soft "meow" of a kitten that has become the building's mascot.
The kitten was an estimated 10 days old when she was rescued July 22 from beneath an air-conditioning grate outside the City-County Building. She was fed Friday by her newly adoptive mother and Municipal Court Clerk Judy Bickmeyer. The kitten was named C.C. for "City-County Kitten," Bickmeyer said.
Bickmeyer said several Wheeling police officers worked on C.C.'s rescue. Officers Greg Thorngate and Dan Finger removed the grate while Ryan Evick lowered himself 10-feet to save the helpless, coal colored feline.
Bickmeyer said C.C. seems to be doing fine, but the kitten will soon take her first trip to the veterinarian's office. Bickmeyer, who owns other cats, said she will share her office with C.C. for at least the next few weeks. Ohio County Health Department personnel have helped in the kitten's care, and employees in the City-County Building have purchased toys and food for C.C.
Bickmeyer noted that C.C. is getting bigger. She said she could once hold the kitten in the palm of her hand. Bickmeyer said C.C.'s eyes hadn't opened prior to her rescue.
Bickmeyer said Wheeling police officers enjoy having C.C. near the department. She said C.C. seems to like the attention.
"The guys stop in and see her, and one of them brought in his wife," Bickmeyer said. "She's a busy thing. She's spoiled already."
