WHEELING - A crash that claimed the life of a Clarksburg man Thursday on Interstate 70 may have been the result of a medical condition.
David Blaine Gooden, 55, was killed in a single-vehicle crash at about 4:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Elm Grove, according to Ohio County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Pat Butler.
Butler said the minivan driven by Gooden veered into the median, struck a road sign and overturned. Excessive speed was initially suspected as the cause of the crash, but Butler said Gooden may have been suffering from a still unknown medical condition that prevented him from controlling the vehicle. Gooden was working for Verizon at the time of the crash, and the minivan he was driving is property of the company.
Gooden's was pronounced dead at the scene. Butler said Gooden's body was taken to a West Virginia Medical Examiner's office in either Charleston or Morgantown. The investigation will not be complete until Ohio County investigators receive the medical examiner's findings.
