WVU Players Plead Guilty

POSTED: September 30, 2008

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ West Virginia basketball players Joe Mazzulla and Cam Thoroughman have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a July scuffle with police at a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

The two were charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness Monday in Pittsburgh Municipal Court. Other charges were dropped. Each player was ordered to pay $222 in fines and court costs.

Both players can request to have their records expunged after paying their fines.

Mazzulla is a junior and is expected to be the starting point guard this season. Thoroughman is a redshirt sophomore.

EllisWyatt: In that case I apologize as I was under the impression that your comment was directed at myself, but I agree with what you have to say about athletes, at least in some cases.

I recall back in the 70s there was a scandal about this very thing, universities passing jocks on just their sport's ability alone, & I believed that had been solved by instituting laws that decreed that any athlete must maintain at least a passing grade ( C ) in order to be eligible to play in any sport related program for any school or college.

Also, there was this thing about personal conduct, both on & off campus, but it appears they have prety much done away with such rules.

I was referrin to the blatant stupidity of so-called "college athletes". I cringe watching interviews on TV because the student, who is supposed to ne somewhat educated, almost invariably talks like he is 12 years old and back on the block.

I went to a private college that was supposed to have higher standards. Yet, we had college "athletes" who couldn't put a sentence together and would stare off into space at the most simple of questions. Given the poor graduation rates, I would say that this college athlete thing is working out just great.

College is for learning not for making idiots feel good about themselves.

EllisWyatt: I can read & write just fine, can you ?

I read that two people from a major state university got boozed up & thought it would be fun to start a fight with the cops, & now it looks like all they have to do is pay a small fine, & it all forgotten about.

Typical for people like that to get away with stuff that would land Mr. Joe Average in jail or prison, as striking anyone happens to be a feloney incase you was unaware of that fact, & to strike an officer is far worse, but they get a slap on the hand & a mild one at that.

Great example for future players.

Can people who can't read and write English legally be charged with a crime?

They should both be dropped from the team immediately for conduct unbecoming, in that each team member is a representative of both the college & state rather they like it or not, & to let them play on would be as good as saying the college stating they condone such behavior.

Reckless actions brings consequences, as does reckless judgment, of which they are guilty of displaying both, hence, they should be made an example of in order to discourage others who may follow their path if they know in advance that they will not be held accountable for reckless actions.

If I seem harsh, too bad, they should have thought about all this before they went on a binge & acted a fool.

It's time for all schools everywhere to stop recruiting marginal students out of reform schools. Do any of them actually graduate?

Seems to me that the Pgh police didn't have as big of a case against them as they originally made it seem if they let them off with just a $222 fine and court costs.
