Brothers Are Charged in Rapes
By GABE WELLS Staff WriterAllegations of rape and other sex crimes against children in unrelated investigations led to a series of arrests Thursday in Harrison and Belmont counties.
The Harrison County Sheriff's Department on Thursday arrested brothers Paul and Kevin McKnight on rape charges. The men are accused of sex crimes against teen-aged female family members. Paul McKnight, 48, and Kevin McKnight, 43, both of New Rumley Road addresses in Jewett, were being held today without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
Harrison County Sheriff Mark Miller said there is the possibility of an additional arrest. He said no other information will be released as the case is still being investigated.
Meanwhile, the Belmont County Sheriff's Department on Thursday arrested a Barnesville man on a charge of rape and a St. Clairsville man on a charge of gross sexual imposition. The Shadyside Police Department also arrested a man on a charge of gross sexual imposition.
Belmont County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Joe Hummel said the Barnesville man arrested Thursday for rape is accused of sex crimes that allegedly occurred when he was juvenile. Therefore, the case has been remanded to Belmont County Juvenile Court.
Hummel said the crimes of which he is accused occurred about six years ago. The alleged victim in the case is still a juvenile, and she just recently came forward with the allegations, according to the chief. The victim is a relative of the suspect, Hummel said.
Also, Mark A. Burgy, 34, of 71280 Barton Road, St. Clairsville, was arrested Thursday by deputies on a felony charge of gross sexual imposition.
He is accused of sex crimes against a juvenile female family member. The crimes in which he is accused reportedly began in September. Hummel said Burgy was scheduled to be arraigned today.
Arthur Lee Williams, 36, of 3 Wegee Road, Lot 54, Shadyside, is being held in the Belmont County Jail on a fourth-degree felony charge of gross sexual imposition. Calls to the Shadyside Police Department were not returned, and no additional information was available in the case.
