Voters Acting Like Fans
By CASEY JUNKINSST. CLAIRSVILLE - Registered Democrat Kay Chaney of Barnesville supports the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin for president and vice president because Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden do not appeal to her.
Chaney and other Ohio Valley voters flocked to Brush Run Park on Sunday to hear Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin speak on the stage where country music legends like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash once played during Jamboree In The Hills.
Though she did not play guitar for her audience, Palin worked the crowd into a frenzy by adopting the phrase "Mine, baby, mine," as she expressed her support for coal mining and coal liquefaction.
And while many national polls show the race trending in Obama's favor, Chaney made it clear she will not support the first-term U.S. senator from Illinois.
"I wouldn't vote for Obama for anything. ... I don't like anything he has to say," she said during the rally.
Chaney said one of her largest concerns with the Obama-Biden ticket involves cultural issues.
"His (Obama's) name makes him sound like he is a Muslim from the Middle East. ... That is not what we need," she said.
Belmont resident Janie Sheehy supports the McCain-Palin ticket because she believes McCain is more qualified to be president than Obama.
"McCain has a lot of experience. ... I can see him as president," she said, noting she cannot envision Obama holding the office.
St. Clairsville resident Mike Fador also is a firm McCain-Palin supporter.
"I believe they both have a lot of faith in God and have all of their priorities lined up right," he said.
Jay and Barbara Reisinger of Wheeling support McCain-Palin - and believe the Republicans have run a cleaner campaign than the Democrats.
"I do not believe the candidates should participate in all of the negative campaigning like they do, but McCain has definitely does less of that than Obama has," Jay Reisinger said.
"I support John McCain and Sarah Palin because they have good policies and good character," Barbara Reisinger added.
One rally attendee who remains an undecided voter is Bellaire resident Debbie Carpino, who said she also plans to hear Biden speak at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the Ohio University Eastern campus.
"My main issue is the economy, and I want to hear what these candidates are going to do to make it better. I had some investments in Florida that went bad because of this whole mortgage crisis, so I want to hear what both sides have to say about the economy," she said.

And yet Mr. Myer and others continue to deny, deny, deny that there are many people basing their vote on race. What? Racists??? In MY Ohio Valley?? Nonsense! Keep the blinders on, folks.... I once read someone the riot act because they suggested that (as someone not from this area)this Valley was full of the most intolerant, narrow-minded, bigots they've ever seen, who look down on people who are not from here or look/talk like them, and judge, judge, judge. Now I'm beginning to think she was right, and I'll add to that ignorant and ill-informed. However, that being said, not all of us are like that. I am a lifetime Wheeling resident, born and raised. Honestly I wouldn't have wanted to grow up anywhere but here. I've had more friendships and opportunities here than in a big city, where I would have been "just another face in the crowd." I just can't believe those words came from people in my own backyard. It's disgusting.

All I can say is NOOGIES to YOU, ST. CLAIRSVILLE!! Your town is now famous for its narrow-minded racists!! Irisheyes, I just watched that video. WOW. Talk about backwards!! They're like cartoon characters. The one lady who says "This is a Christian Country"!!! Uh, lady??? This is NOT a Christian Country and you are a bonehead. The First Amendment of the USA grants us a crazy little thing called "Freedom of Religion". Right here, folks. The FIRST part of the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." HA!

Has anyone seen the youtube video of the reporter talking to folks at the Palin rally in St.C? It is making waves all over the internet. These people are so hung up on how someone looks or what their name sounds like, that they let their guard down to talk to a "clean-cut, all-American" Casey Kauffman... of the Al-Jazeera network! Do you think if the reporter looked, sounded, or had a name like he was Middle-Eastern, that they would have talked to him???? Can't judge a book by its cover...irony at its finest.

Well here ya go about where I live. This area is SOLID, SOLID Democrat and along with Missoula County we were able to elect a Democratic governor and two Democratic senators. Max Baucus has been in office for 20-odd years. Hints: 1.)Our Lady of the Rockies 2.)Chinese New Year Parade (big drunken party) 3.)St. Paddy's Day Parade (big drunken party) 4.)Evel Knievel Days (big drunken party) 5.)Copper mining 6.)The Continental Divide 7.)Anaconda Yeah, we definitely have a lot of r..e..d..n..e..c..k..s.., but I don't think they give interviews to online newspapers, generally. We get a lot of weirdos moving in here trying to start their own militias and what-have-you, because it's so remote. White Supremacists tried moving in but didn't find any sympathy. We generally aren't racist like that. We run those people out of town FAST. They are NOT welcome here! They end up moving north to Alaska...!

YEAH but that line is a huge embarrassment to this area as it makes us all look like "that one" chaney.....(as you yourself hinted in your first posts on this site) ... AS for your last statement about escorting out of town- well I bet you that missoula is one of the only counties that obama takes 'cause I know first hand that the majority of montana is rednick and lots of them pro'lly think the same as Ms. chaney (they just keep their views within the family) hopefully I'm wrong but I am quite scared that the white enemy will defeat the black friend because of that BS mavis, what town or county are you from? not that you'd care to answer me on this lame-0 board and I completely understand if you dont; it's just that I love Big Sky country and have spent plenty of time from libby to hardin, explored the lolo and bitterroot, seen our lady of the rockies and paddled the clark fork and I am always curious as to where the people who visit the wheeling area are from.

Hey... I give Casey Junkins a lot of credit for publishing that comment by Chaney. No sense in hiding it; I think it's important to get stuff like that out in the open, personally. That's what good journalists do. Now we know there are people in the world, Chaney for instance, who have no qualms about wearing their back-***w@rds views on their sleeve. Bet Chaney had no idea that people from all over the place would be reading it and dragging her through the mud for it. Not that she would CARE, but you never know. Maybe she's embarrassed of herself. And like I said, now I can tell everyone who ever wants to visit Montana: Don't you DARE be talkin' trash like that if you come out here. We are ARMED to the teeth out here, don't forget! We'd escort you to the edge of town and send you on your merry way.... SOUTH!

AT ANY RATE, Barnesville, Ohio resident Kay Chaney's ridiculous comment should become national fodder due to its incredibly assinine content: Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden do not appeal to her because of cultural issues. MORE SPECIFICLY: "His (Obama's) name makes him sound like he is a Muslim from the Middle East. ... That is not what we need," AND WHO IS WE?- COME ON LADY!!! If only they would have printed her picture as well... That oughta make stupid quote of the year and Casey Junkins should get co-idiot award for publishing it.

Man you people act like paranoid schizos.... UMMMM this isn't the '70's anymore... it is easy nowadays to stumble on the Wheeling paper website... I mean it's not like only upper ohio valley people can view it... I google stuff all the time and wind up on websites of TV stations and newspapers from all over the world (and make comments if I want to EVEN IF IT IS A LOCAL ISSUE TO THAT SPECIFIC AREA!!!) Some of you Wheeling people are major contributors to the reason WV is laughed at by the modern world... WAKE UP!!!!! she (mavis) shouldn't have to be on here explaining herself- thats unheard of as well as being another embarassment to our area. I for one am proud to have people from other states and countries posting on my hometown RAG.

Okay, just to give you another idea of how we are out here in Montana, let me tell you about Jeannette Rankin. She was the VERY FIRST WOMAN ever elected to the United States Congress, EVER. The first woman to go to Washington DC as an elected official. That was back in 1916, before women nationwide even had the right to vote! Most states were still throwing women in jail for fighting for suffrage, but Montana had already granted women the right to vote and ELECTED ONE!! In 1916!!! We're different out here! Google this: "Jeannette Rankin Peace Center Jeanntte Who?" Copy and past that link into your browser to read about her.

Okay, to clear this up, this is what happened: I was up in the middle of night, terrified about Sarah Palin as usual, and I was Googling her name. I came across this article on the FIRST page of the news about Sarah Palin, and saw the comment by that insipid Chaney woman about Obama's name. As you can see, I'm pretty opinionated, and like I said we have a local Muslim lady in town who's from the Middle East, and she's the ELECTED president of our school board here in this little Montana town, where about 99.99% of us are white, but pretty open-minded. A couple of years ago, in fact, the Senior Class at the high school all ganged up together and decided to elect a little girl with Down Syndrome to be Homecoming Queen. TRUE STORY!! That's the kind of town I live in. We are a very giving, neighborly type of place out here. We wave to passing cars on the highway, and talk to each other on the sidewalk. SO, that's how we are out here! And I was MAD!! Got it? Thanks!

Just had a great laugh...when asked about supporters screaming "terrorist" at his rallies, McCain said that Obama supporters are screaming the same thing about him at Obama rallies. Huh?!? That doesn't even make sense. And once again takes me back to fights with my little sister..."But mom, she did it too!"

irisheyes731--"And how do you know who of these has or hasn't any ties to the local area?" Her first or second post mentioned the fact. I don't care if she posts here or not, and at least she was honest with the fact that she's not associated with this area. But when you come in and attack, based on a prejudiced bias, I'm going to call them out.

But irisheyes731 if mavisdarling had posted with her (assuming mavis is a female) concerns on this 'national issue' instead of her trashing the democrat that said the utterly stupid statement, I might cut her some slack. I might be wrong, but I read that she 'had to google' the comment to see if it was true. She may be concerned about the election, but she was more interested in slamming the idiot that made the statement. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe she presented her point of view poorly, but I see troll.

"irisheyes - If they are purging the rolls of newly registered voters who have multiple or fraudulent registrations. I don't see why that should be a problem. But what you're alleging here isn't clear." LTRRTL - what I am "alleging"...which is actually fact reported by CBS News... law is not to purge voters within 90 days of the election. And there are 19 states that were doing it. For those who were purged, there was no reason (legit reasons are death, duplicate reg, address change). This is from the report: In Mississippi before the March 2008 primary, a county election official — from her home computer — secretly deleted 10,000 voters from the rolls. During the 2008 New Mexico caucuses, thousands of registered Democrats found themselves improperly knocked off the rolls. Ohio election integrity advocates point to massive voter purges before the 2004 election that totaled more than

"I think it is the height of arrogance for people from somewhere else who have no connection to this area to post their opinions on a comment made by a local. On a local paper website. Please give us the courtesy of minding your own business." RedDish, this is a national issue. It would be different if someone from Montana or wherever posted comments about local topics..the 2-man cruiser issue, local elections, etc. The topic is of national interest. So we should only allow locals to post? How would the paper enforce that? And how do you know who of these has or hasn't any ties to the local area? Did you do background checks on them?

People have every right to comment wherever they see fit. I have traveled through 47 states and can tell you that the cultural differences are so shockingly different and ONLY in WV would a quote that hideous even be considered by the reporter for this article... And then to have the editor allow that bigotry go to print shows how biased this area is. Oh McCain will certainly win both this area of Ohio and all of West Virginia (except maybe Monongalia Co) and it wouldn't surprise me If he won the election because money talks and the wealthy want him in the Oval Office despite his VP not being qualified in the least to become President of the United States if it came to that.....

And our Democrat Senators, the carpetbagger and the KKK Kleagle, are internationally recognized... Well, have fun posting here.
