SLOPES TO OPEN
= Seven Springs Mountain Resort opens its slopes
Friday. Hours of operation this ski season will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. - It's already a winter wonderland at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, where more than a foot of snow awaits ski and snowboarding buffs anxious for that first downhill run of the season.
Seven Springs, rated the No. 1 ski resort in the mid-Atlantic region, opens its slopes Friday with plenty of fresh, new looks and attractions for the whole family.
"We are excited to open this weekend, as it is a great opportunity for families to enjoy the slopes before the Thanksgiving holiday," said Seven Springs' director of winter operations John Mates.
Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Lift tickets will be $29 for adults and $22 for children ages 6-11.
With a 12-inch base of natural snow and an extra 4-10 inches of manmade snow being added, conditions are expected to be near perfect Friday for opening day, said Anna Weltz, communications specialist at the resort.
"We've had a foot of snow here already since Sunday, and we are making snow as well," Weltz said. "We're expecting more snow to fall tonight through Friday. Since the nightly temperatures will be in the low 20s and daytime highs in the low 30s, it will be perfect conditions for our mountain crew to run the snowmaking equipment."
For more information or to make reservations, visit www.7springs.com or call 800-452-2223.
Continuing its commitment to provide the best guest experience possible, Seven Springs will open Wagner, upper Phillip's Run, Fawn Lane, the Wagner Beginners' Area and the Foggy Bowl with the Cortina and Polar Bear Express chairlifts servicing all open terrain. The Terrain Park Crew is working to install features.
Midweek season pass holders are also welcome to ski this weekend. The resort's Snowsports School will offer group and private lessons. The snow tubing park will not be open this weekend, but it will open as soon as weather permits.
The Season Pass Office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for those who need to pick up passes or purchase season lockers.
The cold weather and snow showers arrived just in time to provide snowboarders with great conditions for The Premature Jibulation, a Rome SDS sponsored snowboarding rail jam event. Seven Springs will host the event at the Foggy Bowl on Saturday. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the contest will start at noon. The contest is free and open to all snowboarders, but to be on the slopes, riders must have a ski/board ticket. Rome will be supplying a variety of prizes for the winners and great music.
"Visitors this weekend will get a first-hand peek at the numerous enhancements Seven Springs is working on," Weltz added. "As they pull into the parking lot, they will notice the transformation of the chalets into Trillium, the 7,000-square-foot, posh new spa, which will open later this winter."
Weltz said with "everything covered with white snow" and the old chalets gutted, visitors will find a completely new look while keeping the tried and true ambiance of the ski resort intact.
"It's quite amazing. They are in for a surprise," Weltz said of those visiting the resort this weekend. "All of our snow sports programs will be open including the Kids Corner for kids not quite ready for skiing. Parents can drop the kids off at the Kids Corner and they will be well cared for while their parents go skiing."
Also in the process of change is the former coffee shop nearing completion. Weltz said the new facility called Timbers will feature "a great menu with things like crawfish ravioli and Tuscan fish sandwiches." In addition to Timbers, back at the Main Lodge the sound of hammers and the smell of fresh paint will draw visitors' attention to the bright colors of Seven Springs' sweet shop, Gingerbread Dreams. Both are scheduled to open in the near future.
In the meantime, hungry patrons can enjoy fine dining at Helen's Slopeside Dining Room, or a quick meal at the Snow Base Cafe or the Pizza Shop.
In the Ski Lodge, those picking up rental equipment will be the first to experience the new automated rental process. Meanwhile, skiers and boarders will enjoy the new beginners' glade skiing area on Wagner, as Seven Springs eagerly awaits the opening of its newest terrain park, The Alley.

PITTSBURGH -- Two 20-year-old pitchers -- neither of whom had picked up a baseball until earlier this year -- signed free-agent contracts Monday with the Pittsburgh Pirates. They are believed to be the first athletes from India to sign professional baseball contracts outside their country. Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel came to the United States six months ago after being the top finishers in a reality TV show called the "Million Dollar Arm" that drew about 30,000 contestants. The show sought to find athletes who could throw strikes at 85 miles per hour or faster

The Nuttings also promote their loser baseball team, which plays in a taxpayer funded ballpark for which they paid nothing. The Pirates are the biggest losers in pro sports. The Nuttings collect a "luxury tax" from big spenders like Boston and the Yankees. The idea of this tax is to invest it in your team and put a better product on the field. It is a violation of league rules to spend the money in any other way. What do the Nuttings do? They take the money they were going to spend on players and use it to pay down debt, which does nothing to improve their product but DOES increase the value of their stake in the team. They will continue to milk the cash cow until MLB cracks down. At that point, they will sell the team for a nice profit and invest in a pizza shop. We will then read article after article about the wonderful new pizza shop.

Does anyone know why the Nuttings refused to accept 'good samaritan' private donations from Seven Springs patrons to build an Alpine Downhill Race Course. It is my understanding that a number of wealthy families who's children enjoy Seven Springs and ski racing approached the Nuttings about making such a private donation to fund the construction and they refused.

TruthSeeker, as far as some of us are concerned, when Seven Springs opens THAT'S NEWS!!! Front page, baby!!! I'm tuning up the skis today and on the slopes tomorrrow!!! And when Oglebay opens I'M THERE, TOO!!! A quick search of this website shows at least THREE articles last season that promoted Oglebay skiing, on Dec 8, Dec 17, and Feb 11. I bet you $100 there will be articles that promote Oglebay skiing this year, too, and I hope they're are on the FRONT PAGE so us cheapskates who don't subscribe but just use the NR to post here can read them!!! Mapquest shows Timberline, Canaan, and Snowshoe are 3:15, 3:00, and 3:45 away from Wheeling, while Seven Springs is only 2 hours away. So maybe your favorites aren't exactly in the "local market area"? Maybe you could give me a better example of a closer "major" ski area the NR should report on?

The Intell/NR really, REALLY needs an ombudsman. This would be a first step to regain a modicum of credibility with its readers. A nice second step would be to not cross-promote other Nutting enterprises and dress them up as actual news. The only way Timberline, Canaan, or Snowshoe will ever hit the pages of the Intell/NR is if a) a poker tournament is held there that can be criticized by Intell/NR editors, or 2) A fatality happens there. Other than that, those resorts don't exist. Maybe Oglebay's slope can get some press next month when it opens, let's hope.

Demgal aka ktbass said, "It does seem unethical to me for a company to advertise a business it owns in a newspaper it also owns. One should never use one's own money to advertise one's own business." I have no problem with Ogden using it's newspaper to promote Seven Springs. Just don't dress up as news. That's the unethical part.

and maybe Obama will wisely pardon Bush, Cheney and company like Ford pardoned Nixon. It's good precedent to keep when Obama, Biden and company need it in four years.

because proofreading techniques allow for one to identify the same person who is writing as different authors, along with just totally screwing up and posting the wrong post under the wrong name, it took a day to know you were a fake, and then a week or so to identify you as ktbass. BUT, i am concerned there may be more. paranoia strikes deep

I doubt we'll see many heads roll. If Bush pardons the top 140 criminals like Clinton did on his last day in office, the rest of the minor characters will be page 27 news evereywhere. and to save you a little typing: but, but, Clinton!

demgal- it's only the beginning for the heads rolling. of course, we won't find any of that news here, but we will be forced to go elsewhere to know what is Really happening in the country and world. did you see where Bush got snubbed at the G20? but hey, the fact that you and kt are in the 24% of the country that still likes him is your right.

The Cheney-Gonzoles indictment thing IS interesting. Vanguard Group, a company Cheney invests in, owns part interest in detention centers in South Texas. (My IRA might own some Vanguard Group stock, so I'm not saying anymore about that part, as I don't need any more subpoenas today.) I also heard Gonzoles interfered in an investigation that the guards weren't providing adequate siesta time. Heads better roll on this one!!!
