‘Politically Correct’ Can Go Too Far
The IntelligencerAmong the "top 10" lists released at the end of the year was one entitled, "The PC Campus: Top 10 Abuses of 2008." It focused on politically correct behavior in both higher and public education.
Sometimes, "politically correct" actions sound funny. But there is nothing humorous about victimizing some students in order to placate extremists.
According to "The PC Campus," compiled by Young America's Foundation, some of the more egregious abuses included:
- The College of Alameda, Calif., which threatened to expel a student for praying for an ill professor, while on school property. Officials labeled the act "insulting behavior."
- At Florida Gulf Coast University, Christmas activities were eliminated. An "ugly holiday sweater" contest was substituted.
- An elementary school in Claremont, Calif., decided to avoid "racial stereotypes" by telling students they could not dress up as Native Americans and Pilgrims for a Thanksgiving program.
Unfortunately, political correctness has become an epidemic in America. It has been pointed out that a remedy exists: Those who pay the bills at institutions where political correctness trumps reason can simply stop doing so. We suspect that would end the foolishness very quickly.

Sincere thanks to those who replied on how this paper could better sell the conservative agenda. Ebenezer Editors should read and learn (that they gave candy as a Christmas bonus is a little cheesy – unless it came with fine wine and ritzy crackers, or was the really good chocolate stuff from Switzerland). How about conservative merchandising to help the campaign? YAF dot ORG is the website for “PC Campus” creators this editorial talks about. You can buy cool posters there – of my look-a-like think-a-like Ann Coulter, for example, or free even of some guy named Che and Superstars of the Conservative Movement. As to PC Campus, the “egregious” sins this editorial reports are trifling to those that decorum censors. The list is not for minors, but the organization is: “Young America’s Foundation – The Conservative Movement Starts Here.” Maybe YAF and Newspapers In Education can save embryonic conservatives before they grow liberal left wings.

That's a shame, Truth! I can only hope you have the opportunity to interact w/ free thinking, non bigoted people who happen to be right leaning. There are plenty around. Apologies for the ones who have obviously jaded you opinion to date!

Truth, Although I tend to favor the Conservative point of view, I also tend to have some Libertarian tendacies and a few liberal viewpoints (such as being pro-choice). But your statement "There is absolutely nothing that could be said or done for me to vote for conservatives and their agenda. I sense that most conservatives are narrow minded bigots that do not appreciate free thinkers and do not practice what they preach" is rather disturbing! I believe it is that mindset (whether on the right or left) that has resulted in the divisive nature of our nation today. To be so utterly close minded to other points of view is a bit scary for someone who implys that they are a "free thinker". You are the mirror image of the thing that you hate! That being said, I can also say that you do raise some valid points and I do try to understand your point of view! Just my opinion!

REPOSTED --- I guess Mike Myer is just complaining that he will be critcized when he acts like an a**hole. Mike, if you want to be a jerk, that's fine. But you'll have to suffer the public consequences of it (much like with your recent editorial on HIV/AIDS funding).

asking is a sign of courtesy...therefore...all that is right is not right and all that is wrong is not pink or blue..and black or white thinking in current times is a fruitless, unaccomplishing view to paraphrase...achieve a less diverse, but larger "attuned" (and I don't mean Reiki) reader base via increasing circulation to specific target areas thereby promoting harmonious interactive editorial agreement and minimizing political disdain

The editors have wise conclusions on thier topics (in my opinion), but I still see their marketing needs to greatly improve. I suspect that calling Democrats "foolish" and "trumped of any reason" does not make them want to vote R this time or next time. If there are any liberals or Democrats here (I sense there are) then I wonder what you all think this paper might do better to sell the conservative agenda? Maybe that is an impossible task, but it seems worth an ask. Thanks.

Yep, and what about when Neocons call Democrats anti-American, treasonous traitors, terrorist lovers, and Godless? And what about Dems not being "real Americans"? How about including THAT in your pretty little editorial?

Is that a quote? And, what message is being sent? I'm usually able to cope with abstract reasoning but your thread leads nowhere.

All that is wrong with this general area & the paper instead chooses to look elsewhere for a barely intelligent story ? I mean, come on, them was some pretty pathetic examples if one wishes to take on being politically correct, lol
