Memorial Day Events Planned for Local Communities

  • Memorial Day services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Wheeling's Heritage Port.
  • The Bethesda Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. No pre-registration is required. Line up at the old Bethesda Grade School at 10 a.m. After the parade, there will be a special speaker in front of the American Legion.
  • Blake Brothers American Legion Post No. 46 of Benwood will host the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at the Post Home on Water Street. There will be special services at the Mill Monument, the City Building Monument and at the Legion Monument. Lunch will be provided by the Ladies Auxiliary following the Parade/Ceremonies at the Legion Home for adults and at the Fourth Street Shelter for children.

Free flags are available at the Post Home to any family members of deceased Post 46 members to put on graves for Memorial Day.

  • American Legion Post 2277 of Bridgeport will conduct Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Bridgeport World War II Doughboy monument; 10:30 a.m. at the Brookside World War II monument; 11 a.m. at the Lansing World War II monument.
  • Cameron American Legion Post No. 18 will conduct the Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the BB&T parking lot. Pastor Ron McCoy will be the speaker. The Post Honor Guard will salute the colors.

Members of Cameron American Legion Honor Guard will join the Big Run Community annual Memorial Day service at the Big Run Christian Church. That service will begin at 11 a.m.

Veteran's graves in Cameron and Highland Cemeteries, along with those in the rural areas, will be flagged by Legion members. Should a grave be missed call the Post Home at 304-686-3161 to make arrangements to pickup flags.

  • Dillonvale American Legion McCook Post 529 will hold a Memorial Day service starting at 11 a.m. Monday at McCook Post 529 in Dillonvale. The guest speaker will be the former U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Jack Ernest. The post will dedicate a new name to its memorial monument, Keith E. Fisher, killed during the Vietnam era. Charles J. Strizak, commander of Dillonvale American Legion, will serve as master of ceremonies, and William Cermak, an officer with the Dillonvale post, will assist with the program.
  • The Dillonvale American Legion McCook Post 529 along with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Colerain Post 8848 will hold a Memorial Day service starting at 1 p.m. Sunday at Holly Memorial Gardens. Decorated Vietnam veteran Ronald K. Westfall will be the speaker. Jason Way, manager of Holly Memorial Gardens, will read the list of the past year's fallen veterans.
  • Fort Steuben Burial Estates, 801 Canton Road, Wintersville, will host the 55th annual Memorial Day program at noon Monday. The event is sponsored by the Stevens-Christian American Legion Post 557 of Wintersville. The guest speaker for this event is attorney Bryan Felmet, former Jefferson County prosecutor and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army. Monsignor Kurt Kemo and the Rev. Dr. Philip Makarai will be offering the invocation and benediction, respectively. Rich Coburn will be performing vocal selections. A fly-by is scheduled by the 180th Fighter Wing of Toledo, Ohio Air National Guard, with two F-16s. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the event.
  • The annual Memorial Day service in the city of Glen Dale will be held at 11 a.m. at the City Park. The speaker will be Marshall County Assessor Chris Kessler. Others taking part will be the Rev. John Gallagher of St. Jude Church, and Boy Scouts. There will be a fly-over as part of the service.
  • The Jefferson County Veterans Association will hold a Memorial Day service starting at 3 p.m. Monday at Fort Friendship in Friendship Park, Smithfield. Decorated Vietnam veteran Ronald K. Westfall will be the speaker.
  • The American Legion Post 5 Memorial Day observance in McMechen will begin at 8:15 a.m. Monday in front of Center McMechen Elementary School with flowers to be placed on the monument in front of the school. The short ceremony will include a volley by members of Blake Brothers American Legion Post's Honor Guard, and invocation by the Rev. Glen Baker Jr. Following the services, those taking part in the parade will line up at Seventh and Marshall streets and, at 9 a.m., proceed north to Second Street, the entrance to the McMechen Cemetery.
  • A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the All-Wars Monument on the grounds of the Marshall County Courthouse, Moundsville. The Young Marines and others will have readings. There will be special music provided by Paul Musilli, and the Moundsville Honor Guard will participate in the service.
  • The American Legion Paden Post 86 and Sistersville VFW Post 6327 will hold a Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. at Paden Memorial Gardens. American Legion Post 86 Commander David Yoho will be in charge of the ceremonies. The American Legion and Sons of the American Legion will place flags on veterans graves at Paden Memorial Gardens.
  • Pricketts Fort of Fairmont will honor veterans with a special Memorial Day program 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday. Talks will be given by historic interpreters about the men who defended the Pricketts Fort community during Lord Dunmore's War of 1774, the American Revolution, the Indian warfare during the later 1780s and 1790s and the Civil War. There will be a demonstration of frontier militia and a firing of muskets, followed by a wreath laying on the memorial fort.
  • The public is asked to attend the Memorial Day salute to all members of the armed forces at 9 a.m. Monday at 45th and Eoff streets, South Wheeling, at the national memorial located alongside the former St. Ladislaus Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank O'Kruta, St. Alphonsus Parish, will celebrate Mass in remembrance of former St. Lad's parishioners who fought and 12 who died for freedom. Caroline Lakomy directs singing by the community.
  • Retired police chief and Army veteran of the Vietnam War Bob Wallace will be the featured speaker at the American Legion Post 33 Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery, Steubenville. Wallace also is a member of the Belmont County Veterans Service Commission.

What a sham that was in Annapolis today. Anybody watch Obie Hussein try to pull the wool over the mids' eyes today. All in the stands were buzzing about what a joke it was.McCain would not even let him utter his name so as not to disgrace the graduation . Wonder how long before you can buy a Jeep or Dodge down at the Post Office lot with a govt. bank in the PO lobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
