JMHS Principal on Leave After Student Protest

GLEN DALE Just hours after more than 100 students staged a walkout in support of John Marshall High School teachers, Principal Tom Wood announced he will step aside from his position.

In a letter released Friday afternoon, Wood states it is in the best interest of the students for him to step down.

"This will provide the staff and the administration ample time to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged actions," Wood said. "I do this willingly because John Marshall High School and the students of John Marshall High School as well as the staff mean everything to me."

Last week, the Faculty Senate at the school sent a letter to the Marshall County Board of Education, claiming teachers are unhappy with the leadership provided by Wood and Assistant Principal Connie Young. The teachers allege they are being bullied, intimidated and subjected to ridicule as well as micromanaged and deliberately misinformed.

As of 3 p.m., attempts to contact Wood for further comment were unsuccessful.

However, Superintendent Fred Renzella said Wood would be taking a temporary administrative leave while teachers' complaints are investigated.

More details on the resignation and the walkout will be in Saturdays edition of The Intelligencer.
