Updated 5:05 p.m. Wood Stepping Down

JMHS Principal on Leave After Student Protest

By ANNIE DIMMICK
POSTED: May 22, 2009

GLEN DALE Just hours after more than 100 students staged a walkout in support of John Marshall High School teachers, Principal Tom Wood announced he will step aside from his position.

In a letter released Friday afternoon, Wood states it is in the best interest of the students for him to step down.

"This will provide the staff and the administration ample time to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged actions," Wood said. "I do this willingly because John Marshall High School and the students of John Marshall High School as well as the staff mean everything to me."

Last week, the Faculty Senate at the school sent a letter to the Marshall County Board of Education, claiming teachers are unhappy with the leadership provided by Wood and Assistant Principal Connie Young. The teachers allege they are being bullied, intimidated and subjected to ridicule as well as micromanaged and deliberately misinformed.

As of 3 p.m., attempts to contact Wood for further comment were unsuccessful.

However, Superintendent Fred Renzella said Wood would be taking a temporary administrative leave while teachers' complaints are investigated.

More details on the resignation and the walkout will be in Saturdays edition of The Intelligencer.

Unions did not give us pensions, health care and so forth in the workplace. That is just another myth put out by the union PR machine. "If it weren't for unions, we would all work for $1 per week!" BS.

FACT. In 1945, President Harry Truman (DEMOCRAT) instituted wage and price controls in an attempt to stabilize the economy following the decrease in post war production and to address the issue of millions of returning veterans. Businesses could not raise wages so, in order to attract and retain qualified employees, corporations took to offering health care, pensions, uniforms, etc. as a way to get around wage controls. Benefits were not subject to Truman's restrictions. So you see that benefits were not the result of unions.

What have unions brought us? A wrecked manufacturing sector and a 25-year high unemployment rate. Were they the only factor? No. But their unreasonable demands killed the Goose That Lays The Golden Egg.

EllisWyatt,

Ahhhhh, military, now that explains where you get your black and white with no grey area mentality. As for me MASTERS level education thank you very much! While I understand that the military cares about what is going on in government, as well as I, but NEWS FLASH, the majority of teenagers could give a crap! What they do pay attention to are things that are tangible to them, ie things that are happening close to them. Most could not tell you who the secretary of state is, so lets be real here. As for Henry Ford, he had a "trough" that ran behind the assembly line so that employees could urinate and defacate there without having to leave the assembly line!! So, I am thankful to the men and women who fought hard for our unions. Do you have hospitalization... retirement benefits? If so, than you should be thankful also. Although, if you do not need the benefits you can donate yours to MR. Wood and the likes, looks like they will be needing them soon.

If we use your "logic", then Bill Clinton should have been found guilty during his impeachment trial. Barack Obama shouldn't be President, because he lied about his Muslim background, and got his start with the help of known terrorists. Shouldn't the President be held to a "higher standard" or does that merely apply to school administrators with whom you have a problem?

As for my job? None of your business, though I can assure you it is not in the service industry.

College? Yes, I graduated. Military? 4 years. How about you?

Unions gave us prosperity? Revisionalist crap. Unions came into existence in the mid-1930's. By then, the US was the world's leading industrial power-WITHOUT UNION HELP. Henry Ford paid his workers more than double the going wage to build cars on his assembly line. They were NON-UNION. The best companies today, Nucor, Google, Toyota and so on, are non-union.

Unions hold back the talented and protect the lazy and incompetent.

If someone (anyone) had been minding the farm, none of this would have been made public. As far as the kids are concerned, they weren't encouraged to walk out of class. They spend half their time on online and were fully aware of the concerns, either from personal experience or from reading online.

So, numberoneteacher, take your inflated ego and get back to work. I bet I know which county office employee you are!

I would love to know where you work EllisWyatt, fast food joint perhaps? Sounds to me like you are a very bitter, uneducated slob who resents the fact that teachers don't work shifts, holidays, weekends, or summers! Too bad for you! Couldn't cut college, huh? As for teachers belonging to a union, unions are the reason that we have and enjoy the many working benefits that we have! As for MR. Woods personal life, it is very relevent, he is (or was) a principal of a school, someone to be held at a higher standard. Having his mistress appointed as his assistant doesn't say much for his morals or professionalism. And I can tell you he is certainly not someone who I want around my children 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week! But you probrably have no children so you would not understand that either. So please stick your "Would you like fries with that?" kind of job and keep your simple minded comments to yourself. Thank you!

after reading these things and the other article , I am no. one because I do my job. I don't want to stand with you people from JMHS who send the kids out of class when you are supposed to be in state testing like me. I also heard you threaten teachers who don't support you with nasty notes and comments. How about the people like me joining together. Those people make us all look bad.

Whenever teachers are disciplined, evaluated, criticized, reviewed, held accountable or asked to pay higher health care premiums, they whine. The average person works year round. Nurses, police officers, firefighters, power plant workers, coal miners and others work 24/7/365 schedules. They don't get nights, weekends, holidays, snow days and summers off. Maybe some teachers go to training but so what? Do you want a medal for working 7 hours per day, 180 days per year, when the average person works 8+ hours per day, 250 days per year?

Teachers belong to a union. These particular teachers belong to a union and live in the Ohio Valley, which means they are borderline Communists always airing their grievances, demanding more money and less work and generally behaving like children.

"Professionals" indeed. Perhaps we should give cops, soldiers, nurses and power plant workers their weekends off. We could do without protection, national defense, health care and electricity.

My kids weren't in trouble a lot when Wood did discipline. When they were, he handled it fairly... Sorry your kids by your postings got in trouble . Now the teachers are in trouble. I bet you liked it when he followed the rules with kids. Sounds like when my son made excuses and said I didn;t do it. teachers you will be on another paid vacation soon with my dollars that are paying you. Hey Renzella thought teahers were supposed to teach?

MEDIATION! What a cowardly offer! The Board of Education Members trample one another, slobering audaciously with underserving pride amidst media-covered ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking events. However, they seem less inclined to meet the press and face their responsibility on serious issues. Get up from the table and step out into the daylight and do immediately whatever is necessary to secure the facts and serve those whom you are sworn to protect.

No different than any other situation that involves the Marshall Co. BOE. There are BIG problems within our system but the ones that CAN change them don't. There are way too many political butt-kissers involved in Marshall Co. & not enough people willing to stand up for what is right & best for our children. Our BOE needs to be wiped out & find new people that are there for the RIGHT reasons. To fix the problems & give our kids the best learning environment that they can. (There is more to learning than new buildings, football fields, white boards and gymnasiums.) How about some more & better textbooks, more teachers that are there for more than just a paycheck- & I'm not saying that we don't have any good teachers but I could name a few that our children don't deserve.) On a last note, the BOE is EXCELLENT at telling bull crap stories to make the public think that they are doing wonderful things but most are LIES. Just ask them in person & you will get a d

It's sad that it had to come down to the students walking out to get the job done, to get the issue the attention from the Board that it truly needed but I applaud them. We did a similar walk out in the early 90's when teachers were threatening to walk out because of contract disputes. When your students respect you, they will stand up and support you when they think you are being wronged. Good job!

Good for those kids. Thanks to your actions, someone is now taking what seem to be legitimate complaints seriously.

The students reaction to the treatment of JM teachers was amazing to watch. They would face far greater retaliations than any of their parents-yet there they were! I am proud of you all for standing up for the right thing-not the easiest. Teachers, I think you must be doing something right-helping to form our future, responsible citizens that stand up for what they believe is right. Also, not one student got out of hand. It was the American way in action and at it's finest.

Now I have found 3 people who support Wood - there are over 100 people who don't that is one good thing- Yes I hope another door opens for him somewhere else and hopefully not around here maybe H--- - If you have never been treated badly by Tom Wood consider yourself blessed and yes there are 2-3 sides to every story to bad he never gave anyone a chance to have thier side - it was and will always be his way or no way - his leaving before or after the students walk out the bottom line HE LEFT - if never respected the students or teachers - or just normal people such as myself who interacted with him when my son was in school - so don't sing his praises to me the sooner he is gone the BETTER !!!!! I hope he appreciates you, because I will never respect the man !!!!

Let me add to my other comment. If any teacher or any others on staff were being mis-treated, why could not all of those involved sit down like mature adults and air their concerns and come to some type of resolution. I think when I first read it I thought it was the students, thank God I was wrong. As the old saying goes there is 3 sides to every story. A he said she said, then the truth.

I just read this on the computer it is a sad day the students are now able to dictate what goes on. I find this to be really crazy that these kids cannot show respect to these people. Good Luck Mr. Wood, another door will open for you!
