Search on for Missing Man

POSTED: June 2, 2009

MOUNDSVILLE - Emergency crews were expected to resume their search today for a man who is believed to have drowned in the Ohio River at Moundsville on Monday.

A Moundsville police officer said crews were looking for Elijah Anderson, 23, of Moundsville. He reportedly was swimming in the river behind the Busy Beaver store at the north end of Moundsville when he went under the water about 40 feet away from the shore. The area is known as "Pebble Beach."

The missing man was swimming with friends when he disappeared. At least one person attempted to locate Anderson in the water but the current and undertow made it too dangerous to swim out to him.

Divers were called to the scene late Monday evening. Officials received the 911 call about 9 p.m. Monday. Crews from Moundsville, McMechen, Benwood, Powhatan, and Shadyside called off the search late Monday because of weather conditions.
