WHEELING - Mayors, council members and recorders were elected by many communities in West Virginia on Tuesday, but not by many voters.

Most towns reported low voter turnout for municipal elections, including races that took place in Hundred, Middlebourne, Pine Grove and Valley Grove.

  • In Hundred, Mayor Charles A. Sine defeated Erik Melczak by a vote of 75-8.
  • In Middlebourne, residents elected five council members from among nine candidates. Those capturing the most votes and winning the seats were: Rodney Miller with 34; Vera Henthorn, 31; Doug Doak, 30; Dave Meyers, 30; and Bob Clem, 28.

Janice Bonner was close but unsuccessful with 27 votes; Steve Seago, 25; Debbie Hartsfield, 12; and Steve Shepherd, 6.

Mayor Gayla Fisher ran unopposed, and there were no candidates filing for recorder. Current Recorder Sharon Stackpole did not run for re-election.

  • In Pine Grove, David C. Barr defeated Peggy Lueck in a race for mayor. Barr received 41 votes and Lueck 23.

Five council members also were elected. Top vote-getters who won the seats were David L. Williams with 45 votes; Bobby G. Adams, 43; John Johnston, 45; Eva A. Adams, 34; and Thomas E. Dulaney, 33.

Buck Leek received 29 votes but failed to capture a seat. Mary Pyles received 25, and Roy L. Justice 24.

Current Recorder Kimberly J. Bates ran unopposed.

  • In Valley Grove, 10 candidates sought council seats with seven to be elected.

Those selected by voters were Patty L. Naumann with 66 votes; Chad Kleeh, 60; John Harto Jr., 52; Darryl Nick, 47; Gerry L. Trager Sr., 42; Donna Fonner McCave, 37; and Stephanie Brogan, 35.

Also receiving votes but not winning seats were Wilma Ferrell with 34; Rodney Miller, 21; and A.R. Walker, 22.

Voters in Bethlehem and West Liberty also went to the polls Tuesday, but there were no contested elections in either community.

By the numbers the turnout appeared very low. The article doesn't indicate what the percentage of voter turnout was for each community.
