Wellsburg Mayor Fails In Bid for Re-Election
From Staff ReportsWELLSBURG - Challenger Sue Simonetti unseated Wellsburg Mayor Wayne Campbell in Tuesday's municipal elections, while Follansbee voters re-elected Anthony "Tony" Paesano as their mayor.
In Bethany, Jay Eisenhauer defeated John Cole in a race for the mayoral post. Incumbent Sven de Jong chose not to seek re-election.
Unofficial election results indicate Simonetti captured 357 votes to defeat the incumbent Campbell, who received 164. Paesano, meanwhile, won by a margin of 487-199 over challenger John A. Casinelli. Eisenhauer got 76 votes to Cole's 53.
Simonetti said she's proud to be the city's first woman mayor and thankful for the support she received from voters and her family and friends.
"I'm rreally looking forward to the challenges that face me. I'm anxious to get started," she said, adding her plans include establishing a Web site that could include the city's ordinances and other useful information. With council's support, she also hopes to pursue a grant to beautify the city through improvements to sidewalks, curbs and other features.
Paesano also was pleased with the outcome.
"I'm very happy about the outcome. I look forward to working very hard for the people of Follansbee," Paesano said of his victory. "I just want to give back to the town who gave back to me my whole life. And many thanks to the town for their support."
- Also in Wellsburg, Bruce Edward Hunter beat out Raleigh Dean Mason for a 1st Ward council seat in a 67-31 vote. Pamela Ann Mason was defeated in a bid for 3rd Ward council by William J. "Bill" Smith Sr. Smith received 135 votes to Mason's 30.
Each of Wellsburg's four wards is represented by two council members. Because the terms are staggered, the other seats and the position of city clerk are up in 2011.
- In Follansbee, the race for the position of police chief was won by incumbent John Schwertfeger. Schwertfeger defeated challenger Larry Rea by a vote of 398-284.
Winning the race for a council seat representing Follansbee's 3rd Ward was incumbent Kathy L. Santoro by a vote of 126-64 against challenger Arthur Quattrocchi Jr. Santoro also is a member of the West Virginia Municipal League Board of Directors.
- Eight people sought five at-large seats on Bethany Council. Capturing those seats were: Charles "Red" Schwertfeger with 69 votes; Patrick Sutherland, 87; James Forrester, 78; Helen Moren, 69; and Ted Pauls, 79. Unsuccessful in their bids were Linda Chivers with 41 votes; Rebecca Rose with 62; and Bill Hicks with 63.
