Alcohol Retail Seminar Set

POSTED: June 13, 2009

Retailers and their employees who sell alcohol are invited to attend a training program designed to help prevent sales to minors and people who are already intoxicated.

The session is to be held 1:30-4 p.m. Monday at the Marshall County Family Resource Network, 324 Seventh St. - the former Federal Building.

The Training for Intervention Procedures, or TIPS, is a dynamic, skills-based instructional program designed to prevent underage drinking, intoxication and drunk driving by enhancing the 'people skills' of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol.

The TIPS program is designed to help retailers and their employees comply with local and state regulations, help protect them from alcohol liability lawsuits and improve professionalism, customer service and customer satisfaction.

Underage drinking is described as a serious problem in Marshall County, and the training is designed to help retailers and sales clerks understand the nature of the problem and what they can do to solve it. Last year's compliance checks found that in 48 attempts to purchase alcohol, underage customers were able to buy liquor 95 percent of the time. The Marshall County Sheriff's Department is conducting compliance checks again this year.

The TIPS program is funded by grants from the Governor's Office and the West Virginia Partnership to Promote Community Well-Being. The funding is made possible by the state of West Virginia's receipt of a federal Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive grant from the U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the West Virginia Purdue Pharma Asset Forfeiture Funds Drug-Free West Virginia Grant Program. These grants are administered by the Marshall County Family Resource Network, which is a not-for-profit organization that builds community partnerships to make Marshall County a better place to live and work.

The FRN's key efforts focus on substance abuse prevention, health and wellness and community development. The FRN can be reached at 304-845-3300 or on the Web at marshallcountyfrn.com.

Fore more information on the TIPS training or to register, call Theresa Parsons at 304-845-3300 or e-mail spfsigcoordinator@comcast.net.

Until retail store owners are again held 100% liable for underage sales, cashiers will be told to sell sell sell as happened at my job. They are told sell or be fired. I quit when told not to card. And thank God I did.
