Deputies Seek Armed Fugitive
By GABE WELLS And ART LIMANNMarshall County deputies say bullet holes inside a Cameron-area home are evidence that a wanted man has a gun and is willing to use it.
James R. Manganelli, 55, of Cameron is on the run after he allegedly entered the home of Gerald Roupe early Wednesday and fired a shot that penetrated the wall just above Roupe's head. Roupe is recovering from the pistol whipping he received after several shots were fired, according to sheriff's Capt. Mike Phillips. It appears he was beaten with a percussion-cap, six-shot revolver.
Phillips said Thursday that investigators do not know where Manganelli may be. The Marshall County Sheriff's Department has secured warrants for his arrest on felony counts of malicious wounding, assault during the commission of a felony, nighttime burglary and wanton endangerment. He said the suspect could still be in the area and should be considered armed and dangerous.
This is not the first time Manganelli has been sought by authorities. Phillips said Manganelli was on the run in early 2007, accused of an arson fire that destroyed a Cameron business. Manganelli was found in Hazleton, Pa., and subsequently convicted of that crime, according to Phillips. The captain said Manganelli spent the next 18 months in prison. He was on federal probation at the time of Wednesday's shooting incident, according to Phillips.
Phillips said he does not know if Manganelli may have gone to Pennsylvania. Information regarding the suspect has been entered into the National Crime Information Center.
Phillips said investigators have not determined what prompted Manganelli to allegedly enter Roupe's home at about 3 a.m. Wednesday. Roupe told deputies he considered Manganelli a friend prior to the violence that broke out at his home. The captain said investigators do not know if Manganelli intended to kill Roupe with those gunshots.
"We got a call of a burglary," Phillips said. "The individual entered uninvited and fired a round into the wall above (Roupe's) head. He then fired into the TV. Roupe got up, and the subjects struggled over the weapon. Two more rounds were fired in the house. After the shooting stopped, Roupe was basically pistol whipped."
In addition to deputies, West Virginia State Police troopers and members of the Marshall County Special Response Team responded to the call for help placed at 3:10 a.m., apparently after Manganelli had left the home.
Roupe was transported by his wife to Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, but hospital officials would not provide an update on his condition. Phillips said he does not believe Roupe's injuries were life threatening.
Manganelli reportedly left the scene in a 1978 or 1979 model Ford truck with a white bed and different colored doors. Phillips asked that anyone with information on the case call the sheriff's department at 304-843-1500.
