WHEELING -- Anyone who even remotely followed the local high school track and field scene this spring, if given a pen and paper and about 2 seconds, could probably tell you the names of the two individuals who Captain the 2009 Wheeling News-Register All-Valley Track and Field unit.

And, if for some reason you struggle to come up with the names, just look back to last season's honorary squad and repeat same.

That's right, with very little surprise, senior distance ace Stephanie Morgan of Barnesville highlights the distaff side for the third consecutive season while River High senior weightman DJ Duke heads the boys' unit for the second year in a row.

Not only did both Morgan and Duke thrill local track and field enthusiasts with their respective eye-popping marks locally, they also did it on a state and national level as well.

Morgan, who turned heads as a freshman in Michigan four years ago, returned to the Ohio Valley to finish her final three seasons at Barnesville, just as her highly decorated sisters did.

The iron-lunged whiz, who will take her talents to the state of Texas and Baylor University in the fall, captured a total of six Ohio gold track medals in three seasons and was ranked in the top 15 nationally in three events this season.

Her time 9:31.32 in the 3,000-meter run at the Penn Relays is the top mark nationally, the same spot she held in the event last year, while her 2:08.20 in the 800-meters is eighth and her 4:49.52 in the 1,600 is good enough for 14th in the United States.

Duke, meanwhile, is a two-time Ohio state champion in the shot put and broke both Ohio Valley and Ohio Division III records this season, on a weekly basis, before finishing his high school career with an amazing 68-feet, 8.25-inch heave at the state championship meet.

The Ashland University recruit, who also has the Valley's top mark in the discus this season with a 159-7 mark, is ranked fifth nationally in the shot put.

Overall, it was a season where 13 girls made the All-Valley list in at least two events while four outstanding athletes are mentioned in three on the distaff side.

The boys boast 10 two-event performers, but just one who is mentioned in three events.

Along with Morgan, the trio of three-event performers include Steubenville Central sophomore Teddi Maslowski, who captured a state championship in the 100-meter high hurdles with a sizzling 14.71 clocking; Bridgeport High's Cassie Grandstaff, who logged the Valley's top time in the 200-meters at 25.15 and Harrison Central's Ericka Skinner, tied for the area lead in the high jump with a 5-5 mark.

While all three had outstanding seasons, Morgan's exploits were the only thing standing in between Maslowski and her shot at becoming a possible three-time captain down the line. She also led the Valley in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

The Crusaders had a Valley-high four girls mentioned in at least two events and are represented in eight events overall. Along with have seven runners named in the three sprints, Steubenville Central clocked the area's top times in the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter sprint relays.

Another oddity for the Jefferson County school is the fact that Central had four of the seven members of the 200-meter dash, including Maslowski (26-2), Eliza Scarnecchia (25.67), Bernadette Dubois (26.00) and Margaret Beigel (26.22). The final three are all on the team in a pair of races.

St. Clairsville had a pair make the squad in two events, both of whom had previously celebrated state track and field championships at Bellaire St. John. Alexis Campbell made the cut in both the 100 and 400-meter dashes while Kelly Perzanowski was named in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.

The Red Devils led the girls' side by having at least one athlete mentioned in different events and also had a Valley-high four relay teams on the squad.

Other two-time members of the honorary squad include Allison Gaiters of Zanesville (100, 200); Arabia Littlejohn of Steubenville (200, 400); Sarah Blatt of River (800, pole vault); Mara Cain of Meadowbrook (100HH, 300LH), Jaslynn Keyster of Bellaire (100HH, long jump); Darien Singleton of Meadowbrook (100, 300LH); Megan Green of Bellaire (shot put, discus) and Lauren Jenkins of Bellaire St. John (shot put, discus).

A total of three other girls captured state championships, including, Katie Davis of Cambridge in the high jump, Lacey Hampton of Bishop Donahue in the 100 high hurdles and Kellry Mortakis of Wheeling Central in the 3,200.

The Boys' team may not have as many two and three time honorees as the girls, however, it was another banner season led by Duke.

Buckeye Trail's Ethan Snyder makes the cut as the only three-time member of the unit, leading the pack in the both 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-intermediates. Snyder skimmed the shorter sticks 14.64 while taking the longer in 38.66. He also made the cut in the high jump with a 6-2 effort.

Wheeling Park and Bellaire St. John both had a pair of athletes named in two events with Russ Kosowski in the 100 and 200 for the Patriots and teammate Logan Wojcik in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.

Distance runners Sam Foster and and Luke Holubeck are both members of the team in the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Fighting Irish, with Holubeck's 9:34.77 mark leading the valley in the two-mile run.

Weir High's Shawn Burns was the Valley's top sprinter, clocking a scorching 10.07 in the 100 and 22.2 in the 200 to lead both events while other two-time members are Derrick Sproul of Harrison Central (800, 1600); Alex Thornburg of St. Clairsville (1,600, 3,200); Cullen Grover of Tyler Consolidated (110HH, 300IH) and Matt Ritchie of Oak Glen (high jump, long jump).

Grover was a state champion in the 110 highs for the Silver Knights while Ritchie won a West Virginia state title in the long jump for the Golden Bears. The remaining state champions on the boys' side were Wheeling Park's Eric Ripley in the pole vault and Nate Taylor of Tyler Consolidated in the 200-meter dash.

As far as team statistics go, Wheeling Park placed at least one All-Valley member in whopping 10 events, with Steubenville's seven being the next highest.

Big Red did place in four relay events, 400, 800, 1,600 and the shuttles. Steubenville's sprint relay times were the best in the area with a 43,25 in the 400, 1:30.66 in the 800 and 3:25.40 in the 1,600. Park placed in three relays, the 400, 800 and the shuttles and had a local best of 8:14.99 in the longer relay.

Matt Schrumpf of Bishop should be on that list, he was state champ at the 400.
