Bridgeport, Martins Ferry Police Chiefs Jailed and Released
By Jennifer Compston-StroughST. CLAIRSVILLE - Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack were booked into the Belmont County Jail then released on their own recognizance Wednesday evening.
Information regarding the charges against them was not available at press time.
Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson confirmed the pair, along with Bruce Callarik, had been booked into the jail and released. He said he would not have details of the charges until today.
Carpenter and Dojack had been under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification regarding activities related to the surrogate mother for the children of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The surrogate delivered the twin girls at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.
BCII had been investigating published claims that Carpenter and Dojack conspired to break into the surrogates Martins Ferry home. Those claims have been attributed to an unnamed investigator.
Carpenter and Dojack appeared before a grand jury in Belmont County on Wednesday. Special Prosecutor T. Shawn Hervey declined to comment on the outcome of those proceedings.
Carpenter previously said he believed the investigation involved him meeting with tabloid reporters regarding information on the surrogate in exchange for money. Carpenter said he never planned to accept money and that he messed with those seeking information.
Martins Ferry Mayor Phil Wallace said late Wednesday that he was not aware Carpenter had been jailed.
Prior to the three being booked into the jail, Bridgeport Mayor John Callarik said he believed the investigation would reveal his chief of police committed no crime. Dojack, who is married to Callariks granddaughter, told the mayor he is innocent.
"I'm going to stick by my chief, and if hes telling me the truth, there should be no problem," Mayor Callarik said. "If hes not telling me the truth, he's going to have an even bigger problem with me."
Mayor Callarik could not be reached for additional comment after the three were booked into the jail.

Remeber, the upper Ohio Valley has been controled by the Democrats since 1933. Just google Corruption on Steubenville, or Jefferson, County, and all other in area. Overwhelmingly Dems. Absolute power equals absolute power. Read "12 Against The Underworld" or Paul Hankish Story. The Republicans haven't been in power for over seven decades in the ohio Valley! like West Viginia's legislature Dem controled and corrupt. Read this Ohio Stae article ***********ohio****/news/ohiocentric/33222744.html. Also read this ***********timesleaderonline****/page/content.detail/id/506884.html?showlayout=0 Go to ****citydata**** for demographics. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty in getting political demographics from the two towns in question. Mathematically, they should be dems but I'll keep looking until I find out.
