Air Evac: No Bad Feelings About Move
Medical helicopter company cites too much area competitionBy JOSELYN KING
WHEELING - Air EVAC is leaving the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport because there are too many medical helicopter companies in the local market, a company spokesman said.
"The Wheeling area isn't big enough, and there's not a population to support all there are," said Danny Marcum, project director for Air EVAC.
"It's not because of competition or bad feelings. It's simply because of the other aircraft that are serving the community. It's not really about the number of calls. ... There's just not enough for the number of aircraft serving the area."
Air EVAC has had a base at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport since June 2008.
The company, which operates 88 bases in 14 states, now is seeking to move to Wetzel County. Officials are in the final stages of setting an agreement with the Wetzel County Commission and Wetzel County Hospital, according to Marcum.
Medical helicopters most often seen locally are STAT Medevac aircraft from Pittsburgh and Health Met in Morgantown.
Health Met and Air EVAC are the only medical helicopter companies licensed to pick up and transport patients in West Virginia, according to Marcum. STAT Medevac, which has a base in Steubenville, can respond when called for mutual aid, he said.
In addition to its Wheeling location, Air EVAC has bases in East Liverpool, Parkersburg and Logan County, W.Va.
Thomas Tominack, manager of the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport, informed county commissioners this week of Air Evac's pending departure in November, and he attributed this to a lack of calls the company has received.
He suggested that local hospitals were calling units outside the area with whom they had established relationships, and he also made reference to a stabbing incident in West Liberty in which Air EVAC wasn't called.
Robert Fowler, assistant chief of the the West Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, said the Air EVAC medical helicopter team at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport did little outreach to local emergency squads. He said this may be why the company has been receiving few calls in the area.
"The helicopter that came that night wasn't 70 miles away in Pittsburgh," Fowler said. "It was Stat MedEvac in Steubenville.
"The reason that helicopter was called is that Air EVAC had no outreach and did not come out to the local fire departments," he continued. "That night, there had been nothing set up to use them."
Fowler said the West Liberty VFD has medical helicopters land at the Windsor Coal Co. for transport, and that Air EVAC would not have had the coordinates to do that because that information had never been provided to the firm.
But Marcum noted that all medical helicopters in West Virginia are dispatched from one central location Medcom, a state-run service in Morgantown. Medcom provides all necessary information to the responding helicopter.
He added that in December, Air EVAC sent all local emergency squads a letter telling them about AirEVAC's operations and offering to do educational outreach.
Hospitals, meanwhile, have the option of what medical helicopter company they wish to have called.
And Maggie Espina, spokeswoman for East Ohio Regional Hospital and the Ohio Valley Medical Center, acknowledged that those hospitals are more apt to call companies with which they have "an established relationship."
She said it typically takes a medical helicopter 10-12 minutes from the time it is dispatched to fly to a local emergency, and that it generally takes that amount of time to stabilize and treat the patient prior to transport.
"We have been working with these companies for years and are satisfied with the services they have provided and the timeliness in which they respond," Espina said. "We didn't see a reason to change for the sake of changing."

dummie. I do not have my facts wrong. I spoke with an outreach person and that is exactly what she told me. She told me the membership allows them to call the helicopter company first and then have the local squad respond to take them to the LZ.

paragod has faacts wrong even if you have membership you still call 911 and with 88 bases nationwide there is a good chance that if traveling and in an accident you could be flown by one of this company crews

WVFirefighter - you are right but bob F and many of the EMS in this area know who they wanted and it was for all the wrong reasons. STAT sends all EMS that calls them a large check as a thank you, this is totally illegal. Reimbursement for time and equipment used is one thing but Stat sends big checks and it is against the law, I am sure this will be put to a stop very soon and I am glad that they will not be doing as many scene runs in WV. Don’t get me wrong id clean up one or two people from Air Evac but they taught us for free and are offering it to many others for free. Hey bob have them come teach your crews, It’s Free.

I agree Bob is a great medic. Still sorry to see them out of the Wheeling area but Wetzel Co. does need them more. But even with them moving they are still only going to be 22 miles from Wheeling that is no time by air.

Paragod: I'm on your side. "Waldo" seems as if he (or she) has stretch marks around their mouth becasue the thing never shuts long enough to let someone else's opinion be heard.... yet alone for them to listen. Waldo, I've worked "up north" and if by "north" you mean Hancock County, people are better off staying south of the county line. It's as simple as this: Air Evac is no longer going to be housed at the Ohio Co. Airport. Plain and simple. No matter what anyone says on this website, they are gone. I personally believe it's for the best, but that is my opinion and you are entitled to your own. As for those of you pointing fingers at individuals, grow up, if you are going to speak badly of someone, have the fortitude to let your identity be known, not under an alias. And to Bob, you are a great Medic and a great instructor; ignore these ignorant imbisils on here.

I can't believe the ignorance of some of the post on here. If you are going to speak your mind at least know what you're talking about. I work in EMS and do it proudly. To put the blame on Brooke Co. EMS, WLVFD, or Mr. Fowler for Air Evac's departure is ridiclous. Get the facts straight. Air Evac was not needed in this area it's as simple as that.

Waldo, that sounds like an air evac and medcom issue. If stat had been called direct there would have been disciplinary issues.

paragod - did you not read the lines above "Fowler said the West Liberty VFD has medical helicopters land at the Windsor Coal Co. for transport, and that Air EVAC would not have had the coordinates to do that because that information had never been provided to the firm." They called stat direct! "But Marcum noted that all medical helicopters in West Virginia are dispatched from one central location Medcom, a state-run service in Morgantown. Medcom provides all necessary information to the responding helicopter." This means they relay all the info

Waldo012569 how can you throw it out there that the closest helicopter, when this is done through a central point in WV. As for following the rules of dispatching a helicopter, how can you support a company that sells memberships that would bypass the 911 system and medcom. They simply tell people not to call 911 just call air evac and they'll land the helicopter and take them where they wanna go. Sounds alittle fly by nite to me!!!

WOW! This says it all... "Air EVAC is leaving the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport because there are too many medical helicopter companies in the local market, a company spokesman said. ... It's not really about the number of calls. ... There's just not enough for the number of aircraft serving the area." Say what? Is Air Evac so poorly run that no one could look around and see how many helicopters were already here? Did they think by magically showing up one day that all hospitals would automatically start calling - after dealing with these other services, all with solid reputations, for years? And to say its not about the number of calls?!? Thats crazy! I guarantee that if they were flying enough patients to make money they would not be going to Wetzel Co. This is a for-profit company owned by people in New York City. They could care less about the people here in the panhandle.

Maggie Espina - and Robert Fowler told you the real reason they are leaving, put in simple terms WE DONT CALL THE CLOSEST HELOCOPTER! Wetzel Co. Will and has. I would guess if the area continues to call as they have in the past month or so and Wheeling Hospital gets the new ER you will see Air Evac Put yet another base in WV. Look at Air Evac’s map many bases are 35 miles apart. Air Evac has provided many area volunteer EMS agencies with free training, where before each class cost $75-$150. They are all about the community and I am sure they still will be!
