Cops Order Silence In Stonegate

From Staff Reports
POSTED: August 26, 2009

Lawmen aren't the only ones not talking about a "family situation" that occurred Friday at Wheeling's Stonegate development - residents also have been told to be tight-lipped.

At about 5 p.m. Friday, law enforcement officers from the Ohio County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police responded to a call at the neighborhood, blocking access to half the development and telling people to stay in their homes or vehicles.

State troopers at the scene declined to disclose what was happening. Some neighbors speculated that a man had barricaded himself in his home and refused to exit. The State Police also had a special incident vehicle at the scene, as did the sheriff's department.

As of Tuesday evening, law enforcement officials have refused to publicly comment on what caused 13 cruisers to respond to the neighborhood and remain there into Saturday morning. A Triadelphia Volunteer Fire Department truck also arrived in the area at about 9:30 p.m.

On Tuesday afternoon, some residents of the Stonegate neighborhood identified the subject of the situation as a federal law enforcement agent. One couple noted they weren't home at the time it happened, but were told later by neighbors that local law enforcement officers were telling residents not to talk publicly about what happened.

Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler on Friday night described what occurred there as a "family situation." He said Tuesday the case is under the jurisdiction of the West Virginia State Police.

"I cannot comment on another agency's case," Butler said, even though his deputies were at the scene.

A West Virginia State trooper in Wheeling said State Police headquarters in Charleston has been notified about media inquiries, and no information was being released at this time from the Wheeling detachment.

Calls to State Police headquarters in Charleston were not returned Tuesday.

The neighborhood, located off Boggs Hill Road, contains about 20 new, large brick homes.

Dirty cops protecting themselves? Had this happened to you or a family member being evacuated out of thier homes because a cop watched to many Dirty Harry flicks is unacceptable. The First Admendment and this is like the NAZI, Facist, Communist way to " ORDER" one to none speach. The Blue Code or Honor Amoung Thieves. Oh oH. Now I'll be investigated. Well, people wanted a change. How is that change going for ya?

This whole thing is no one's business. People are just p i s s e d because they want to know someone else's business and can't. Its killing you people not to be able to have your nose up someone else's rear end sniffing around!

Typical of law enforcement taking care of one of their brothers.

The sheriff excuse that this is a "private family matter" just doesn't cut it.

Did he make that decision or did the family request it?

If the family requested it, can any family request a police report be held?

If the matter was the responsibility of the state police, then why did the sheriff's deputies stay?

If anyone wants to see a freedom of info act, go ahead and file it, as no one else will.

Is it time for the News-Register to file a Freedom of Information Act request?

I'm wondering the same thing Marhaba is, that this may be a way of protecting "one of their own" from losing a job. We need good law officers, and losing one is terrible. But what if he's really a bad guy with a short fuze? Again, I think we deserve at least a cursory explanation from the authorities.

Marhaba, if I said "kaif hallok", would you understand?

Nancy...everyday the "wheeling today" publishes names of persons arrested for "private family matters" after being charged with domestic assault/battery. Here we have a federal ATF agent being protected by law enforcement after he allegedly made inferences about bombs, barricading himself, and causing police resources to be dedicated to this "private family matter." Everyday the magistrate court (and sometime circuit court) docket is filled with "private family matters" resulting in charges for domestic related offenses. Can I expect all domestic arrests in the future by local law enforcement to receive similar treatment? Will wheeling islanders be taken to the crisis unit rather than the northern regional jail? A conviction for domestic will effectively end a law enforcement officers career due to the lautenberg amendment. Could this be the reason they are protecting his badge?

Hercx007, I disagree with you. If the littlest thing happens in the poor communities of East Wheeling, Warwood or the Island everyone if privy to it. They have it all over the news. This is everyones business when you have someone who is able to make a bomb, let alone threaten to use it. You shouldn't protect anyone. It has been a routine practice in Wheeling that "People with money" seem to get away with everything, but poor and blacks seem to be crucified legally and in the press. Turnabout it fair play!!!!!

I'm surprised they even got a magistrate to sign the warrants, seeing how 3 out of the 4 are former law enforcement themselves. TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!

The sad part is the charges will be dropped, he will be transferred, and will still be out there carrying a gun and a badge!!!

I've heard there are two misdemeanor warrants out for the thug that are in the process of going bye-bye. He was taken to Hillcrest instead of NRJ. Think that would have happened for a resident of EW or the Island? I urge everyone to paper all the law enforcement agencies and courts involved with Freedom of Information Act Requests until we get some answers!!!

I agree with Ellis. I have property in East Wheeling and on the Island. Had this incident happened on the Island, heck, we'd be lucky to get one cruiser to swing by.

Just my opinion, but when an incident threatens the neighbors and uses that much of our tax paid services, we are entitled to at least the cursory explanation.

Nancy-

You are missing the point. It's the case of one jackboot protecting another. If it was Joe Shmoe it would be entirely different.

I trust if anyone's safety is at risk here, you would have been notified by the police.

If this is a private family matter, I could care less whether I know the details or not.

I am amazed at those on here who on a daily basis yell and scream about the govment, the govement is taking away and intruding on their their freedoms and the govement is inefficient and the govment is "bad", suddently are crying that the govment owes them info on what could be a private family crisis.

I'll find out who it was anyhow. I wonder what type of punishment he will receive. Maybe we should go to the local FBI office and find out who this danger to society is.
