Charlie Is Not ‘That’ Wilson

By JOSELYN KING With AP Dispatches
POSTED: September 11, 2009

BROOKSIDE - Yes, it was "Rep. Wilson" who called President Barack Obama a liar during a speech to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night. But residents in Ohio's 6th Congressional District should take note - it wasn't your "Rep. Wilson."

U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio, wants people to know he's not U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C. - the lawmaker who shouted at President Barack Obama.

The Ohio Democrat said people have phoned his office after confusing him with the South Carolina Republican who yelled, "You lie," while the president was addressing Congress on Wednesday night.

The two Wilsons are not related. The one from Ohio said he remains friends with his GOP colleague and feels bad for him.

The local Wilson added he was surprised by the outburst of Rep. Joe Wilson, but he noted that the health care debate has stirred up emotions.

During the last term of Congress, there were actually three House members named Wilson. In addition to the Ohio Democrat and the South Carolina Republican, there was U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M. She chose not to seek re-election in 2008.

The Ohio Wilson also has been confused with former U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson, D-Texas - the subject of the book and movie "Charlie Wilson's War." The Wilson from Texas served 12 terms in the House, from 1973 to 1996.

And there is also another Joe Wilson associated with Washington.

At the request of Vice President Dick Cheney, in February 2002 the Central Intelligence Agency asked retired diplomat Joseph Wilson to investigate claims that Saddam Hussein had purchased uranium ore from the African nation of Niger. The diplomat later became famous for his "What I Didn't Find in Africa" editorial, published in the New York Times in 2003.

Shortly after the editorial ran, Joseph Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was outed as a CIA operative.

Joseph Wilson and others alleged that the disclosure was part of the Bush administration's attempts to discredit his report on his African trip.

Eliias the clone, Agreed w/ the numerical irrelevence of the R party, but why hasn't Cap/Trade, Healthcare and card check passed yet?

And which part of the Bush mess didn't you like?

The 50 consecutive months of job growth, 6 consecutive years of economic growth, a 17% jump in GDP ($2.1 Tillion), after-tax income per capita gorwth of more than 11 percent, 4.7 percent increase in the number of new businesses formed, tax cuts that benefiting 116 million Americans, the largest three-year increase of revenue in 26 years, and tax receipt growth more than $542 billion between 2000 and 2007, providing 40 million Americans w/ better access to prescription drugs, saving millions of lives in Africa!

Of course his spending was out of control and there were certainly many other "debatable" issues as well.

So all that and a very un-original anti Ellis routine = boring FAIL!

The R's are mainly a party of hypocritical, angry, intellectually dishonest, white, old men - the party of Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh, "you lie!" and the birthers. The R's have rendered themselves irrelevant with by spewing hatred, bigotry, and demagougery. The R's have no new ideas, are unserious about governing America and oppose change merely to oppose a President who has beaten them at every turn. The R's made a mess of this country under Bush and have no idea how to fix it. They are no longer a viable opposition party. In the last election, the country overwhelmingly rejected the failed policies of the bereft R party.

When liberals shout down a Republican president, hold signs calling him a murderer, throw eggs and garbage on his car and go on national TV and make jokes about his death-that is okay. It is humor. It is frustration. It is Free Speech.

When a Republican lawmaker calls a Democrat a liar (which he is), the Republican is "evil".

There is a double standard in this country. Liberals get away with this Red Brigade behavior because their ranks are bloated with people who contribute nothing. Why is it always liberals who march en masse? Why is it always liberals who have 3-day protests? Why are liberals always taking a bus to this gathering or that?

Because Conservatives work and liberals don't. Conservatives showed up at the Town Halls because it was after work and they had no other choice. Liberals can show up anytime because they are leeches who take from the Conservatives who work.

I live in Joe Wilson's district in South Carolina and he is my hero. Not only because he told the truth but because he spoke his mind. Not to worried about him losing in the next election - this is a conservative district in a very conservative state. To most of us he is a HERO!!

I should say "additional" provisions as there currently is language in the bill (sec 246) specific to illegal aliens.

It was inappropriate and disrespectful of Wilson to yell what he did, but he has a point. Proved in the fact the Sen. Baucus and company are now adding provisions to the bill to prevent illegals from receiving the benefits of the healthcare plan. A "verification" provision had been previously voted down by Democrats. So it appears some action has happened as a direct result of Wilsons outburst!

formerohvalleyresident: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO COUNT ILLEGALS WHEN THEY DON'T RESPOND TO THE CENSUS BUREAU?

Wilson's opponent has raised $750,000 since the outburst. Nice work moron.

I only heard two words in the Tuesday Telepromter-fest that were true: “YOU LIE”! How many times have we heard the 47 million uninsured figure? Obie now says there are 30 million with no insurance, because he finally stopped counting the illegals!

Of course illegals will still get insurance because 3 GOP amendments to require VERIFICATION of citizenship before getting insurance were DEFEATED? So if you truly want taxpayer funded health care for Americans, WHY not verify?

Of course, Obie will grant amnesty to 20 million illegals so by definition there will BE no illegals, provided that ACORN can register them as DEMS for the 2012 election.

Getaclue sorry that "he lied young men died" does not hold water. Using YOUR reasoning then Congresman Wilson has the same right to do the same to President Oboma. He thinks he lied as YOU THINK President Bush lied.

You have every right to be a right wing screaming rethuglican and you have every right to be an obnoxious puke. This idiot took the limelight away from the righties by being the focus of a stupid act rather than their opposition to items in the health care proposals. Way to go idiot. We really liked the media focused on you apologizing instead of talking about the topic. Idiot.

No Ellis, I cannot follow that because it is NOT TRUE!! You really need to lay off the caffeine.

Truth

If free speech rights did not extend to lying, we wouldn't have a modern Social Democrat Party.

Even his biggest fans acknowledge that Bill Clinton was a liar.

The fact is, Obama may not give illegals free health care within the bill BUT he is attempting to grant them instant citizenship, which will permit them to get free care.

Can you follow a that or is it too complicated?

Obama is being sneaky, at best, and outright dishonest, at worst.

Even though the REAL Charlie Wilson was a coke snorting, booze loving, skirt chasing, liberal Democrat, he at least understood the threat from Communism and what actions where required to neutralize that threat.

Maybe if there were more Dems like the REAL Charlie Wilson, this nation would be better off.

Jos, can't believe you would write this piece without telling the whole story. Now we know that Mikey wouldn't let you but geez it is your name on this piece.

boxer: I really doubt that the Congressional GOP will censure Wilson. Rush, Hannity, Cantor, and Bonehead say he was right to yell, "You lie!!" and what's more that they believe Wilson was correct no matter that he wasn't correct. That in and of itself is a very scary fact. They seemingly cannot read and don't know what is or is not in any version of the bill and don't mind lying to the American public to further their political ambitions.

When does "free speech" and outright lying meet in a train-sized wreck?

TruthSeeker

What Mikey forgets to add is that Rep. Joe Wilson was himself lying when he yelled, "You lie!!" at the President during the Speech to Congress. It is indeed a lie that any version of the health care bill would allow illegal immigrants to be covered. Come on, Mikey! Include the facts surrounding Rep. Joe Wilson's rude outburst instead of just making sure we know which one owns a furniture store in Bridgeport. It's not like anyone from around here would get the two mixed up.

Wilson from South Carolina will be censured by his own party for his ludicrous and unprofessional behavior. Those who condone this type of bully-boy attitude mark themselves as being unworthy of the respect of their peers. Whatever else happens, Wilson of South Carolina has reduced his chances of effectively representing his constituents and this is the worst thing that can happen in a democracy.

This story is silly. We know who Charlie Wilson is. He's not from South Carolina. Hey, and guess what? He wasn't even the Charlie Wilson played by Tom Hanks in the movie Charlie Wilson's War.

Don't worry, Charlie, nobody would mistake YOU for somebody who actually has a clue and the cajones to speak out about it.
