Hefty Ballot Awaits Jefferson County Voters

Township trustees, school board members and council members all are to be elected in Jefferson County on Tuesday, and the ballots will be long.

Most all races are contested and have many candidates, and a total of 26 issues are slated to go before voters in communities throughout the county.

Just one of those issues is a county-wide levy, as voters will be asked to renew a 1-mill senior citizens' service levy for five years.

Others, meanwhile are school levies.

Toronto City Schools is requesting the replacement of 5-mill levy for current expenses, while the Edison Local School District is seeking the renewal of a 2-mill levy for the emergency requirements of the school district.

  • In Steubenville, voters will see a contested race for mayor between Louis A. Arrico and incumbent Domenick Mucci Jr., and current councilman David Fortunato faces a challenge from Nate Kline in the 4th ward.
  • In Toronto, Maureen Howard and Diane L. Julio face off for a 1st ward council seat, while the candidates in the 2nd ward are Dorothy S. Blaner and Gayle A. Troski.
  • In Adena, four members of council are to be elected from among Carol A. Bednar, Shirley A. Bednarski, Bobbie Gaffney, James L. Horton Jr., R.J. Konkoleski, John A. Lengyel, Nancy V. Malin and Brenda K. Roski.
  • In Bergholz, voters will choose four council members. Candidates are Ronald W. Brodzinski, Ronald Gower, Gary E. Griffith, Nick Howell, Bob Kirkman and Greg Wood.
  • In Mount Pleasant, four council members are to be elected from Illa Rae Covington, William D. Moskonas, Anna Otto, Wayne Roberts and Michael Todoroff.
  • In Stratton, residents will select four members of council from among Kelly A. Householder, William D. Householder, Rick Kelly, Andrew Prosko and Paul N. Zdinak.
  • In Wintersville, voters will choose four council members. Candidates are Robert E. Cochrun, Robert Martin Sr., Jason Mattern, Bob Merriman (write-in) and Matt Parise.
  • In Yorkville, there are also four council members to be elected. Voters will select from among Blair Closser, Valerie Klubert, Thomas J. Magnone, Philip A. Piciacchia Jr. and Karen S. Vargo.

Two township trustees also are to be elected in the following townships, with respective candidates listed.

  • Brush Creek - Christopher T. Rawlings, Lloyd V. Rose and Matthew Rose.
  • Cross Creek - Randy B. Jones, Jerry Mathieu, Robert Nottingham and Louis Vandeborne.
  • Island Creek - Mart T. Clark, Sam Crafton, William F. Koehnlein, Gary W. Merrill and Roger Roth.
  • Knox - John M. Danko, Donnie Elder, Donald L. Miller and Chuck White.
  • Mount Pleasant - Gregory S. Blazy, Charles Kokiko Jr. and Charles J. Strizak.
  • Ross - Charles C. Henry, Phil Jordan, Jim Pieniazek and Donald A. Teichman.
  • Salem - Thomas D. McConnell, Eric Mercer, James Harold Mills, Jody L. Sheets and Lucian L. Zook.
  • Saline - Charles Crawford, Delbert Duane Furbee, Gene Furbee, Richard Hazelip and Danny L. Householder.
  • Smithfield - Mitch Basich, William Cermak Sr., Ronald Malin and Sesto L. Nidle.
  • Springfield - John D. Booth, Joseph R. Kmatz, Kenneth Nice and Daniel Stone.
  • Steubenville - Darrin A. Corrigan, Tim Eddy, John S. Fabian and Joseph F. Lamantia.
  • Warren - Fred Bensie, Daniel E. Meeker and Carl J. Sgalla.
  • Wayne - Charles T. Allan, Walt Gibson, Wayne E. Harris, Vernon Jackson, Charles F. Newburn, Kevin Walker and Brian S. Wilson.
  • Wells - Jeff Bettineschi, Bruce M. Clark Sr., John E. Cook, Larry W. Owens, Jodi L. Roush and Jamie L. Sterling.

The following school board races and candidates also will go before voters, with three to be elected in each district:

  • Toronto City - Kyle N. Brown, Larry Davidson, Bob Reeves and Timothy L. Starr.
  • Buckeye Local - Justin Buck, Charles S. Haggerty, Martina Herrlein, Naoma M. Kolkedy, Ray D. MacAlister Jr. and Alice Nina Owens.
  • Edison Local - Kurt Achhammer, Richard Gregor, Scott O. Lockhart, Frank Marcino Sr., Warner Sanders, Nancy J. Smyth and Karen Sue Taylor.

And local issues will be decided in these communities:

  • Adena - Renewal of 3-mill levy for police protection for five years.
  • Adena - Renewal of 6-mill levy for general construction, reconstruction, resurfacing and repair of streets and roads for five years.
  • Amsterdam - Renewal of 3-mill levy for current operating expenses for five years.
  • Bergholz - Renewal of 3-mill levy for current expenses for five years.
  • Dillonvale - Renewal of 3-mill current expenses levy for five years.
  • Irondale - Renewal of 3-mill levy for current expenses for five years.
  • Irondale - Renewal of 4-mill levy for current expenses for five years.
  • Stratton - Additional 2.5 mill levy for current expenses for five years.
  • Wintersville - Renewal of 2-mill levy for fire protection for five years.
  • Knox Township (excluding the city of Toronto and villages of Empire and Stratton) - Renewal of 1.5-mill levy for roads and bridges for five years.
  • Ross Township - Renewal of 1 mill levy for fire protection for five years.
  • Saline Township - Renewal of 0.6-mill-levy for fire protection and emergency medical services for five years.
  • Smithfield Township (excluding the villages of Adena, Dillonvale and Smithfield) - Additional 0.5-mill levy for maintaining and operating cemeteries for five years.
  • Springfield Township (excluding the villages of Amsterdam and Bergholz) - Renewal of 1-mill levy for fire protection for five years.
  • Springfield Township (excluding the villages of Amsterdam and Bergholz) - Renewal of 1-mill levy for general construction, reconstruction and resurfacing and repair of roads for five years.
