Brooke Seeks Perfection

Bruins finish regular season with trip to Musselman

By SHAWN RINE
POSTED: November 5, 2009

During the first meeting after he was hired Brooke coach Tom Bruney sat down with his seniors and talked about things like legacy and goals. You can't have one without the other, he says.

The result of that meeting was a checklist of five things they wanted to accomplish before they left.

''Their first goal was to have a winning season and we've already accomplished that one,'' Bruney said. ''Their second goal was to qualify for the playoffs and we've established that one. Their third goal was to beat our rival Weirton (and) we were able to do that.

''No. 4 was to beat Wheeling Park on the island, on TV. We did that one.''

The last one, though, will have to wait another week.

''The fifth goal they set for themselves, they decided they wanted to make some noise in November. We now have that opportunity to achieve Goal 5,'' Bruney said.

With all but one of those ambitions checked off, perhaps that makes Friday's season finale on the road at Musselman (4-5) what coaches commonly refer to as a trap game. For most programs that may be an issue, but not for the new and improved Bruins.

''It could be, but we're not going to allow it to become one because we do have another legacy to work on this week,'' Bruney said. ''I'm not sure of the exact number, but I think since Brooke's become a high school in 1969 I think we've had four 10-0 teams. Being undefeated is one of those accomplishments that last a lifetime.

''A lot of people may not remember a 6-4 or a 5-5 or a 7-3, but when you go 10-0 everybody remembers that.''

But wait, there's more. In all probability a victory against the Applemen would enable the Bruins, the top-rated team in West Virginia Class AAA for most of the second half of this season, to play all their playoff games in the friendly confines of Brooke Memorial Stadium, which with each passing day becomes a more hostile environment. Brooke has already clinched a pair of home games.

''It's actually important for me too,'' Bruney said. ''Ironically enough, my grandfather played on an undefeated team in 1929, then my dad did in 1959, and then I played on one in 1979.

''So here we are in '09 and I have an opportunity to coach one, so I thought that was kind of unique that it's the third generation to be able to say that. ''

According to the Brooke coach, Musselman is another program that runs the wing-T offense, something the Bruins have seen quite a bit this season. Defensively, the Applemen will predominantly be in the 4-4 and like blitz often.

''Now, what kind of team are they? That's hard to judge off film because you can see size and can figure out speed and the kind of schemes they're trying to run,'' Bruney said. ''But on film you can't tell what type of team they are - what they hang their hat on and what their personality is.''
