Credit Uacnion Embezzlement Probed

By ANNIE DIMMICK Staff Writer
POSTED: November 6, 2009

Moundsville police are investigating reports of embezzlement in the city.

According to Marshall County Prosecutor Jeff Cramer, officers are looking into reports of embezzlement at the Marshall County Federal Credit Union on Third Street. While Moundsville police remained tight-lipped regarding specifics of the case Thursday, Cramer was more forthcoming.

"My information is that it was about $11,000 (allegedly stolen) and was not taken from accounts of the shareholder (customers)," Cramer said.

Marshall County Federal Credit Union Board President Dale Parks said the suspect, an employee, was terminated as a result of the allegations. He said a yearly audit in August prompted the investigation by police, after auditors found booking discrepancies. While he did not say where the money that was allegedly stolen came from, he stressed that customer accounts are not in jeopardy.

"No money was taken from anyone's account," Parks said. "We're going strong."

Cramer would not release the suspect's name.

"I can't say at this time," Cramer said. "I would defer any questions to the detectives investigating the case."

But lead investigator Darren Whipkey of the Moundsville Police Department, at this time, would not say who is being investigated.

"There is an investigation into a misappropriation of funds," was all Whipkey would say.

Both Cramer and Whipkey noted that no charges have been filed.

I think the headline spelling should be probed, too.
