Blue Eagles Exact Revenge
Magnolia stays undefeated with road victoryBy JOEL DANOY
GRAFTON - Revenge is a dish best served cold.
In a rematch of the 2008 state final and on Grafton's Senior Night, the visiting Magnolia High Blue Eagles (10-0) overpowered and outmatched the Bearcats (4-6) during a 25-3 victory Friday for their first unbeaten regular season since 1998.
''Those are some big kids out there,'' Bearcats coach Mark Yoho said of Magnolia. ''We held solid at the start but they just took over the game with the size and physical play.''
In their most-recent meeting, Grafton beat Magnolia, 56-25, claiming the Class AA state title. This season, a new state champion will be crowned as Grafton failed to qualify for the playoffs in Yoho's second year.
''We knew from that game last year that we had to take it to them, but we were getting thin and had to put some our younger players in,'' Yoho said.
Magnolia, which entered the game rated No. 2 in West Virginia Class AA, powered its way to victory behind the running of back Stingray Bates and Dillon Jackson, who each surpassed 2,000 yards rushing for their careers. Bates carried 19 times for 77 yards and two scores, while Jackson accumulated 84 yards on 16 carries.
Grafton struck first, 5 seconds into the second quarter, with a 28-yard field goal from senior Tristan Reneau. Magnolia scored twice in the final 5 minutes of the half on a 3-yard run by Bates and a 16-yard pass on a deep post in the back of the end zone from quarterback Justin Fox to Cameron Benson.
Magnolia led at halftime, 14-3.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Magnolia recorded two safeties - one on a blocked punt by Cole Mullett and the other on a sack by Zach Neff.
Magnolia pulled away from the Bearcats on a 13-yard Bates run with 7 minutes left in the game.
