Casinos Not Solution To Ohio Budget Woes

News-Register
POSTED: November 8, 2009

We have no doubt that many Ohio voters who said "yes" to gambling casinos last week were thinking of the state's dramatic budget crisis when they cast their ballots. The casinos are expected to bring hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue in to local and state governments each year.

But much of the money is earmarked for local governments, schools and specific state programs. The casinos will do virtually nothing in the great scheme of budget things to rescue state government.

And before Ohioans get too comfortable with the new money, we urge them to glance across the river to West Virginia. Here, our state government has come to rely too much on gambling revenue. With new competition from Pennsylvania and yes, Ohio, some of that cash will be going away.

Casino gambling in Ohio is not a quick fix. It is not even a good band-aid. At both local and state levels, dramatic action needs to be taken soon to keep budgets in balance - without new taxes that will hurt Ohio families and the state's economy.

It appears to us that local government leaders in East Ohio are ahead of state officials in addressing that concern. We urge them to keep up the good work - and convince Gov. Ted Strickland and state legislators to follow their lead.

'seeker--you never fail to ammuse!! AGAIN, you have no clue in the world what the*****you're talking about!

Apparently Glen Beck is one of Mike Myers "minions",...is that what you're saying? That's what it sounds like? Does Glen have money invested in MTR and the Downs?

Are you off your meds again?

You STILL make no sense what so ever.

If you have better ideas concerning Gambling in Ohio, and getting the money in sooner, maybe the Gov. will pay top dollar for your advice and guidance.

What will be the Island Casinos solution to competition? Make a couple hundred more slots payback nothing? We now play the lotteries more. Better odds of winning something.

Wheeling Island will not be able to compete with first-class, full-service casinos in Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland. They will lose most of their business from Ohio. However, there is a way to attract some of that business. I told Steve Minard several years ago. He didn’t like the idea then. But things are different now. Build a first-class, full-service casino and hotel across Cabela Drive from the Wild Escape Theme Park.

'seeker,--just what the h*ck are you talking about? It's not about Mike Myers and his "minions". It's about the Rev.Gov.'s wish to bring gambling to Ohio to provide money for the general fund.

The Casinos will probably not be up and running when the Gov. is voted out of office. In the short run, all that was achieved by this vote was the Gov. limited himself to one term.

In the long run, the money will be "too little, too late", to have much effect on the problems that it's supposed to solve. The time frame is too long. The problems need attention now.

But hey!,...we got casinos!!!....W O W

Things will really start hopping in Cleveland now!!!

Ohio's budget woes are not what Mikey cares about. Mikey and his minions are worried about their investments in MTR and the Downs.
