HESS, Robert Otto, 86, of Wheeling, W.Va., died Sunday, November 8, 2009, in the Forest Hill Retirement Community, St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Robert was born October 5, 1923, in Wheeling, W.Va., the son of the late Otto and Elizabeth "Bess" Zoeckler Hess.
In recent years Mr. Hess has been living at Elmhurst The House of Friendship, Wheeling, West Virginia. He enjoyed the great care he has been receiving and the good food in addition to the safety of the Assisted Living and his many new friends.
Robert was the owner and president of Robert O. Hess Company, Inc. 1949 (Food and Sugar Brokers.)- He retired from Domino Sugar Company in 1988 as District Manager, Industrial Products. Robert moved to Tamarac, Fla., for 16 years. He returned to Wheeling, W.Va., after his wife's death.
A member of "The Greatest Generation." He graduated from Linsly Military Institute in 1941 (The Linsly School). Robert attended West Virginia University and West Virginia Institute of Technology with an Associate Degree in Electronics. He got his basic training at Camp Crowder, Missouri, and Camp McDowell, Naperville, Illinois, Army Signal Corps (Acting First Lieutenant). He was recruited by The Office of Strategic Services, America's first intelligence agency in 1943 and trained at the Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Md., the super secret OSS spy school known as Area F. Robert served during World War II as a Counterintelligence Agent and Radio Operator with the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in the European Theater of Operations (ETO). The OSS was the Precursor to the CIA( Central Intelligence Agency). He was discharged in 1947.
Robert was a life member of the OSS Society Inc; a life member of American Radio Relay League; a member of Amateur Radio Call Sign W8VIF since 1940; a life member of The Quarter Century Wireless Association; a life member of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Association, Boca Raton and Pompano Beach Florida; a life member of The National Rifle Association; and a long time member of the Triple States Radio Amateur Club; a member of the BPOE Elks Club of Wheeling; a member of The Serra Club of Wheeling; and he was also a member of the Fort Henry Club, Wheeling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Burke Hess, August 7, 2000; a sister, Mary Jane Hess, July 2, 2009; a grandson, Matthew Grendel in 2007.
Surviving are his children, Robert O. Hess, Jr, and his wife, Mary Lou Tokar Hess of Tempe, Ariz,; John P. Hess and his wife, Rose Healy Hess of Moundsville, W.Va.,; Deborah R. Stauver and her husband, David A. of Wheeling: Cynthia A. Hartlieb and her husband, Dennis of Wheeling; and Patricia J. Grendel; and her husband, Dennis of Scranton, Pa.; sister-in-law, Mary Helen Burke Heberer of Merritt Island, Fla.; 6 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at Bethany Pike, Wheeling. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend J. Daniel Pisano as celebrant. Interment in Our Lady Queen Cemetery, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Vigil services will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at 7 p.m. followed by a military services by the Moundsville Honor Guard at 7:45 p.m.
