Local Veterans Tell Students How It Was

‘Take a Veteran to School Day’ is observed

WELLSBURG - Almost 40 years later, talking about his experiences in Vietnam and upon returning home still brings Jim Davis to tears.

Davis, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, was among six local veterans who joined Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., at Brooke High School Monday for "Take a Veteran to School Day."

Rockefeller, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, helped launch the program throughout the state last year.

The event brought together veterans from several branches of the military who served in combat from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"We were the 'baby killers,'" Davis said of the volatile reaction by protesters to Vietnam soldiers when they returned home. And with the U.S. currently embroiled in another divisive conflict, Davis urged the 40 or so students in attendance to write a different story this time around.

"Do not let that happen today ... when you see a veteran, welcome them back with open arms."

Warwood native Tom Innocenti recalled excitement rather than fear as a boy in the U.S. Army preparing to enter the Korean War - an experience he said robbed him of his innocence.

"My biggest fear was that the war would be over before I got there," he said. "But that's how it is when you're young."

Looking back, however, Innocenti said "the experience was wonderful."

"I am a member of the most exclusive fraternity in the world," he said of being a military veteran.

Jeremy Harrison is a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and the current war in Iraq. He told students there was a "battalion of angels" watching over his unit as they built a bridge - under fire - to replace one blown up by Iraqi soldiers.

Today's youth, he said, can learn much from the motivation that drives our military to answer the call to serve their country.

"There's something inside that tells them they need to do something greater than what they are," Harrison said. "That's a great goal in life."

Also on hand to share their stories were John Chernenko, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and ex-POW who fought in the Battle of the Bulge; Bill Harris, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; and Gene Camilletti, who was trained as a medic in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Rockefeller, who noted there are 178,000 military veterans in West Virginia alone, said he can't think of a better way to observe Veterans Day, which is Wednesday, than to honor the veterans in attendance and reach out to them.

"I think we didn't do well by our veterans for a long time," he said, pointing out that the availability of technology has made war "reality television" for this generation, something he believes has changed our attitude toward veterans for the better. "We should be thinking about veterans every day."

Rockefeller said he enjoys sitting down with veterans for a few hours at a time - just him, with no members of the media or his staff present - and listening to what they have to say. Rockefeller said we as a society need to open ourselves up and really let these veterans' stories sink in.

"You can't accomplish the world in just an hour and a half," he said, "but it's a start."

He said events such as Monday's are unique because it's typical for veterans to be reluctant to share details of the life-altering experiences they went through. He said Chernenko, a man he's known for years, is a perfect example.

"He never once told me he was in the Battle of the Bulge," Rockefeller said, noting that battle often is described as the Gettysburg of World War II. "I know his kids, I know his grandkids - he never told me."

Brooke High School was the kickoff site for this year's Take a Veteran to School Day program, created by the History! channel and sponsored by the West Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association. A dozen more schools statewide will participate in similar programs through Nov. 19.

Those of us who have served in the military have done so for a multitude of reasons, some of which are love of country, of its ideals, princples and uniqueness, and some because that was the only opportunity available to a kid out of high school. Some would say that those reasons are old fashioned, outdated, corny. Well be-that-as-it-may, it is an honor to serve ones country. To me it matters not what my fellow citizens who have not served in the military think or feel, it only matters what my fellow veterans think. It is a unique honor to be counted amoung members of a special kind of brotherhood/sisterhood. Happy Veterans Day!

something magical in rising above fear and accepting you can't go home, then realizing you are skilled enough not to need to go home, then caring less about home. The 8888 u lizzards were repeating the domocratic party pledge. Shelter half never kept out the monsoon or no shoulders.

what is more patriotic , Defending the constitution or posting talking point to cover for suspicious politicians ?

joker- these youngsters are handicapped by liberal parents who likely burned their draft card and ran off to Canada awaiting the day they could return and get elected or appointed to public office and wipe their indoctrination all over the constitution and blot out reference to patriotism or national pride. For most part, republicans do have a lock on patriotism, and liberty.

Republicans and the far right don't have a lock on patriotism. I find it offensive that you think you do. A person can be pro-soldier, but not pro-war.

It is very disturbing to know that I put my life on the line so that you could sit there and have a turkey on Thanksgiving. Why do we have a Thanksgiving for anyways. Is it for the founding fathers. Did not they fight for this country. How many of you can say that you wake up in the middle of the night having nightmares about watching your buddy get blown apart because someone else put a bomb in his lap or a bullet in his head. Just because you people are blind and dumb founded. Open your eyes. Look around you while you sit there eating dinner in peace or even watching T.V. or playing on your Wii system. Please thank a Veteran. Thank them for your freedom. And don't forget to think hard about where you would be today.By the way I lost 19 fellow soldiers in the bombing at Khobar towers in 1996. How do you think I feel on a day that nobody cares. It is very upsetting.

I am a Veteran of foreign wars and I agree with Ellis. Everyday should be Veterans Day. I retired from USAF. I have been there. Anybody ever hear about Khobar Towers being terrorized with a 20000 lb bomb. I was there. I seen what could happen. Most of you people are blind of what is actually going on around you. How many of you actually thanked a veteran. Thanked a Veteran for your freedom. Thanked a Veteran for keeping the terrorists outside of your free world here in the Great US of A. How many of you actually can say you servived a terrorist act. Well I can tell you one thing I can say I survived. HOW MANY OF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT YOUR FREEDOM. If it wasn't for the military where would you be at today. Take aminute and think and think hard and while you are thinking about it Thank a Veteran. It really means alot. How many people know that I am a Vet? I really can't tell you. How many have thanked me for there freedom? Not ONE. It is very disturbing.

Ellis - We are all sick and tired of you.

The truth is, our military personnel generally have higher IQs and come from higher income households than their civilian counterparts.

I am sick and tired of the contempt and the backstabbing from the left. When this nation is attacked by your beloved terrorists, why don't you call the ACLU to protect you?

We spend huge sums on our military, much of which does not find its' way into the pockets of the troops.

EVERY day should be Veteran's Day. EVERY day should be Memorial Day. Children should be taught the Pledge, the National Anthem and our TRUE history. They should be taught respect for the troops and veterans.

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation."

President George Washington, 1789

"War is always a lie". I gather, from your comment, that you believe there is no cause worth fighting for. For, why "train and maintain an expert defense" if we are not going to use it?

This is not the Revolutionary War. There are no front lines, no flanking, no battlefields. We are in a Global war, and we have been since the 1970's. Terrorism is a constant threat and the hatred of the Wahabbis will not go away simply because we wish it so.

I am thankful, each day, that I was fortunate enough to be born in the USA. And I thank God, every day, that better men went before me and made the ultimate sacrifice so that I could be free.

Because it is so PC, liberals & liberal politicians pretend to "support the troops". They tell soldiers "thank you for your service" and then proceed to stab those soldiers in the back. Liberals have contempt for the military, thinking them stupid, brainwashed baby killers.

"I wonder if 'Jim Davis' is the same Jim Davis years ago that I went to high school with in Warwood and who was along on camping trip to Canada we took as Scouts?" Rover1958.

Could be. I also remember a Jim Davis from those days of yore.

War has never solved anything, except for:

creating the United States and for ending

slavery

Genocide

Fascism

Nazism

and a few other 'unplesant' institutions and regimes!!

Thank you veterans for your sacrafice and service, we are hardly worthy!

War is always a lie. It's interesting how so many choose war instead of civilization. Has no evolution taken place in the hearts of humanity? Do we still really believe that killing is a crime, except under the direction of our leaders? How much comfort is offered by a colored ribbon or a star-shaped piece of metal to a mother who has lost a child to the pointless endeavor of war?

We, as a society, must evolve our thinking and actions toward peaceful existence and humanity, while maintaining a strong defense of our virtues. Honor is not in strength of force, but in practicing human righteousness.

The best way we could thank these brave soldiers, is to learn from our past, to train and maintain an expert defense, and under no circumstance place our people in harm's way for frivilous causes.

I would recommend the documentary, "The Good Soldier", which previously aired on Bill Moyers this past Friday.

You want to know what war looks, feels and smells like? Watch this documentary. It should be required viewing for all citizens.
