Miner Injured In Rail Accident
By ANNIE DIMMICKA coal miner is recovering after an accident Tuesday at the McElroy Mine.
According to Consol Public Relations Director Joseph Cerenzia, Kevin Barnhart, 38, of St. Marys, Ohio, was injured when a beam struck him in the chest at the Cameron Portal.
The accident happened at about 6 p.m., according to a Marshall County sheriff's report. The report states the beam weighed about 85 pounds and was 60 feet long. Cerenzia said Barnhart was unloading underground track rails, when one of them buckled and struck him in his rib cage, breaking one of his ribs on his left side.
Emergency crews from Fork Ridge EMS as well as deputies responded. Barnhart was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling for treatment. Following overnight observation, he was released in good condition Wednesday, Cerenzia said, noting an investigation of the accident will take place.
"Consol Energy automatically conducts an inquiry of every injury to ensure that the incident will not be repeated," Cerenzia said.
