Jury To Be Selected In Surrogate Theft Case
Compiled by StaffST. CLAIRSVILLE - Jury selection was expected to begin this morning before Belmont County Common Pleas Court Judge John M. Solovan at the Belmont County Courthouse for the trial of suspended Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter for his high-profile theft case involving a Hollywood couple's surrogate mother.
Carpenter, along with Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, are accused of conspiring to steal items from the surrogate's Martins Ferry home to sell them to celebrity photographers. The alleged crimes reportedly occurred while the woman was carrying twins for stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The woman gave birth to the twins last summer at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.
Carpenter is facing multiple felonies, including burglary and receiving stolen property. He has pleaded not guilty and could face 21 years in prison if convicted on all charges
The 32-year-old Carpenter is accused of burglary, one count of receiving stolen property, theft in office, tampering with evidence and unauthorized use of property or services.
Dojack, who also has been suspended with pay for the past several months, is scheduled to go to trial on Jan. 12. He has been charged with two counts of complicity to burglary and one county of complicity to receive stolen property. He could spend up to 9 1/2 years behind bars is convicted.
Special prosecutor T. Shawn Hervey of Harrison County, has been appointed to prosecute the case due to a conflict of interest for Belmont Prosecuting Attorney Chris Berhalter.
At the time, Hervey indicated it would better to have him as witness than to try him as a defendant.
A third man, 50-year-old Bruce Callarick, was facing charges of stolen property. However, the state moved to dismiss those charges.
A court spokesperson said the trial would likely continue throughout the entire week.

I agree with Ellis Wyatt! And if he really WASN'T GUILTY.. how in the world did his name come up? Did someone just pick a name out of a hat and say.. the winner is.. I think not. He HAD to have some connection. Why in the world would he want to mess in someone else's life. Greed? Stupidity? Apparently, if he needed more money, he should've gotten a job as a bouncer at a bar on the Island. Lots of scandal there and he could've kept his nose clean! Goof! He deserves what he gets!

Well first off NOT GUILTY TILL PROVEN SO///Secondly I am sure that if one of your children or family members did something wrong and the police let them slide you wouldn't have a bad thing to say about the police! It isn't right what they are being accused of if they are guilty but they, like the rest of us are only human and make human and stupid mistakes and I am sure if everyone thinks back about their past we have all made mistakes and I am sure that there are even things in all our past that we did against the law. Barry I hope everything works out well for you and your family.

Beach, supporting our local police and wanting to see justice done to 2 men who broke the law and possibly entered someone's home to get photos and information for a tabloid when they're supposed to be enforcing the law and setting an example for the men and women they lead as their chief are 2 very different things. Personally I support law enforcement 100% and have never been unkind to a law enforcement officer, even when given tickets. That being said, if these men committed crimes, they should be tried and receive the appropriate sentence. If what you are suggesting is true, and the guy who owned the hotel set up our local police, that would be a*****shame considering he's the father-in-law of Bridgeport's police chief, one of the men who's accused in this case.

Nothing like slogging throught the nepotistic and rancid sewer of Belmont County law enforcement and politics. You can break into people's houses (as long as you are in power), but you better not speed through town! Welcome to the People's Republic of Belmont County!
