WHEELING - As a single mother with five children under the age of 8 - including 7-month-old twin girls - Pamela Santee considers herself blessed this Christmas season, thanks to the generosity of Elmhurst - The House of Friendship in Woodsdale.

Though Santee's children will have a bountiful Christmas, some charitable organizations throughout the Ohio Valley are struggling to meet their goals this season. John Nanny, commandant of the local Marine Corps League, said cash donations for Toys for Tots are down 47 percent this year compared to last.

Major John Blevins of the Wheeling Salvation Army reported a 25 percent decline in donations from 2008.

"I guess it is just the nature of the economy - we are just doing what we can," Nanny said Friday as he accepted toys at the Ohio Valley Mall. Toys for Tots accepts both cash donations and toys so the program can provide gifts to less-fortunate children.

"We are steadily filling the orders the best we can," he added.

In addition to the mall, those looking to donate to Toys for Tots can do so at these locations in Wheeling: True Value Hardware, Mail Center Plus, Spic and Span Dry Cleaners, Words and Music at Stratford Springs, Devinci's Pizzeria and Ollie's Sports Bar and Grill, and Henry's Marathon.

At True Value Hardware, employee Nancy Meredith said a local 9-year-old girl had a special request for her birthday.

"She told her friends that she did not want presents. She wanted them to give the presents to Toys for Tots," Meredith said of the girl.

Nanny said the Toys for Tots collection is a joint venture between his local league and the Kilo Co., Third Battalion, 25th Marines unit in Moundsville.

As for the Salvation Army, Blevins said the Wheeling organization "needs more people involved."

"If we just had some more people to go out and ring, it could really make the difference," he said. "Somehow, God will help us through this."

The Wheeling Salvation Army bell ringers are stationed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Christmas at the following locations: Kroger on Mount de Chantal Road and the Kroger in Warwood; Riesbeck's in Elm Grove; CVS Pharmacy in Woodsdale; and Wal-Mart, Cabela's and J.C. Penney at The Highlands.

The organization also distributes "angel tags," tickets featuring the names of needy area children. Those who take the tickets are to purchase toys for the boy or girl on the ticket.

"We have given out all of our tags. ... We just hope we can get all of them back with toys," Blevins said.

Those who would like to donate to the Salvation Army should call 304-233-4400 or visit the office at 140 16th St. in Wheeling.

One organization doing fairly well this Christmas season is the Coat Closet of Belmont County in Bellaire. Margaret Paolucci founded the group to distribute coats to needy children to keep them warm during the cold winter.

"Last year, we gave away 1,078 coats to kids from all over the valley. It is something that we feel we need to do," she said.

Paolucci said many do not realize the level of poverty some area residents face.

"I had a mother come in with five children who needed coats. The mother did not even have any shoes," Paolucci said. "It was heartbreaking."

Paolucci thanked organizations such as the Ohio Valley Christian Soldiers, the Bellaire High School Alumni Association and "many local stores."

"We take cash donations, but we also take gently used coats," she said. "We also need boots to give away."

Those looking to give to the Coat Closet should call 740-676-5077 or stop by the office, located at 3565 Belmont St. in Bellaire, between 3-5 p.m. on Wednesdays or Fridays.

Another viable charity is the Ohio Valley Free Wheelchair Mission, based in Wheeling. The international organization provides wheelchairs to impoverished, disabled people around the world.

On Friday, Wheeling Councilman Robert "Herk" Henry, his wife Rose and other members of the Columbia Club Troubadours gave money raised from a recent variety show to the Mission.

"This is a great thing they have going here. ... We felt we should help them out," Councilman Henry said.

Wendy Scatterday, Ohio Valley coordinator for the Mission, said a $60 donation provides a chair to a poor person somewhere in the world.

"This is a tremendous donation, and we are extremely grateful. Their support will help get people off the ground and into wheelchairs," she said.

The House of the Carpenter in Wheeling also needs help for its ministry, which is defined by its 45 years of feeding the hungry, caring for the poor, sheltering the cold, welcoming the homeless and helping the needy. The organization, based on Wheeling Island, serves children and adults - but children are its focus. Some youth served this year say they don't have enough to eat or have been restricted from participating in sports because their families can't afford the necessary gear and equipment. The charity provides food and clothing as well as utility assistance to those in need, and it also offers a summer camp, guitar lessons and more.

For more information on The House of the Carpenter or to make a donation, call the Rev. Gary R. Beale, 304-233-4640, or write to The House of the Carpenter Inc., 200 S. Front St., Wheeling WV 26003.

As for Santee, her children all still believe in Santa Claus. They should, because a generous collection of Christmas packages is coming their way this holiday season. Santee's name was given to Elmhurst through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upper Ohio Valley.

"It's truly a blessing," Santee said. "I'm overwhelmed."

Elmhurst residents even got into the spirit and hand-crafted ornaments for the Santees. On Friday, the packages all were gathered from under the Christmas tree at Elmhurst and presented to Santee to take home.

"I am so grateful to them each and every one of them," Santee said of the staff at Elmhurst. "I can't thank them enough for caring and deciding to think of someone else."

There are 24 employees at Elmhurst, and Jamie Crow, executive director at Elmhurst, said it was the second year the staff has taken on such a project.

Staff Writer Joselyn King contributed to this report.

I agree with everyone here that wants to stop a vicious cycle. For Ex: A single parent with 5 small kids turns out 5 young kids that will have kids. Some will be on welfare..some will be deadbeats. Kids learn what they are taught.

meant to say "disagree politically with 80% of the people on this listing"

..in charity giving they are haters. I disagree with 80% of the people on this listing but I know they dont "hate". And if this is a Catholic-dont-use-a-rubber issue with supermommy...well..its the Catholics responsibility to aid, not mine.

So...this woman "deserves" the Elmhurst donation, but....according to her friend. she has a job, pays the rent blah blah blah like other people, collects no foodstamps/school lunch (very hard to believe this one) so what makes her more deserving than anyone else working and not on welfare? Why didnt Elmhurst chose a layed off steelworker or someone that DOESNT have a job? More to this story than meets the eye. But beyond this supermommy, I dont think people "hate" in theyre comments, just sick of the "call for donations" that end up in an executive officers paycheck, or triple dipping by the "grandma dragging 6 grandchildren" to churches, toys4tots, SA, etc. Good example - SOME Hilldar residents expect the government to give them gifts for the kids. Ive helped MANY in this valley over the years, including getting dozens of poor people jobs, and Im not blowing my horn about it but dont think because a person has a disagreement in "charity&q

tigger73-

the posters on here just want to hate. they hate everything. pretty sad, but only they can repent and do the right thing. they would rather just insult and judge people.

This is a nice story, and glad your friend is ok, with her 5 blessings.

Not that its any of your business, but no, Pamela does not recieve EIC. SHe is on no form of welfare. And for you Susan, Pamela doesnt need help feeding her children. She works everyday, pays rent, utilities, and buys her own food. This organization chose her because of the fact that she is single and is actually able to do it on her own with no help. There are some places that like to commend those who are trying and not asking for help. Perhaps your jealous because your not the chosen one?! How much rent do you pay? I dont think you could pay over $700 a month in rent and support 5 children just fine. Dont hate on someone who can. For all you haters in general, why are you being negative to someone who DOESNT collect any form of welfare?? Why dont you spend your time worrying about those cases and not this one.

My wife and I drop money in every salvation army pot we pass however the folks who should be having kids arent and the ones who shouldn't be having kids are. If u cant afford to raise your own children without sucking funds from others stop having kids. I have no sympathy for the mothers but feel sorry for the children. These breeding machines know the system and how to play the game. We reward these babymaking moms with more funds. Don't tell me what great people they are. Most of them are lousy parents who's kids grow up following in their mothers footsteps.

It's quite interesting how any story related to helping others brings out the worst of the worst. You people make me sick. Bunch of self-righteous and self-serving pricks. The cream of the republican implosion.

And I can't believe this system blotted out c*ndoms. How about rubbers? Is that word permissible?

Perhaps they should have given Mom a box of ******s for Christmas. Come on! She's got 5 kids under the age of 8 and she's single, and she's depending on handouts to raise them? I don't care what an "upstanding" person she is, it's time for her to quit birthing kids she can't feed.

Does Pamela get the EIC? If so, then gets welfare. End of story.

I agree there should be a safety net. Pamela is deserving and the best part is, her family was chosen by this organization and she didnt even know anything about it until they contacted her. She is very grateful for the help she is recieving.

tigger73: I am sure your friend is very deserving and is trying her best to provide for her family. If so, then she is not who people are complaining about. I believe there should be a safety net for those who truly need help, and private organization are better to seeing that those people who deserve, get it. What I do not believe in is people who cheat or skirt the system, and ultimately harm the people like your friend who need help.

Pamela Santee is one of my best friends. If there is anyone deserving of this genoristy,it would be her. Before you pass judgement on someone elses life, you should check your own back door. Know the facts before you open your mouth. Pamela is an upstanding person who is very hardworking and takes care of her children very well. She works everyday and buys them all that they need. So what if she needs a little help at christmas. She doesnt sit on welfare,or recieve food stamps. She pays rent and utilities like the rest of us and supports her children with no help from their deadbeat father. She doesnt need childcare assistance;3 children attend school and the twins are taken care of by her sister. Not every single mother is a lowlife who takes from taxpayers.

EllisWyatt: You see, Hoopie has a problem with your statement on welfare because that takes away from sticking to the rich man. I guess he sees no problem with these couples that never get married, yet have children out of wedlock. While the mother gets welfare, food stamps, WIC, heating and housing assistance and free daycare. The father holds down a very good job and has plenty of money to support his family....however they milk the system.

What hoopie fails to understand...many who voted for "Hope & Change" Obama wanted crap like this gotten rid of and now realize that it has gotten worse.

In addition to forced birth control and losing your voting rights, those on welfare should also be required to refrain from gambling or playing the lottery; drinking alcohol; using any form of tobacco; having anything but basic cell phone service; having cable; owning expensive assets or driving $40,000 SUVs.

Teach these people some responsibility! Everyone is a sucker for the single mon with 8 kids or the "poor" senior! Yet, these people have seemingly unlimited amounts of money to shove into slot machines, buy cigarettes, drink beer or throw parties.

Get off your ass and work! There are jobs out there. Even if you have to volunteer someplace while receiving benefits, do it! You can build experience, learn the importance of work, get a reference, etc.

People can't save $2 per week for their child's Christmas gift but they CAN spend $8 per day on two packs of cigarettes? PATHETIC.

I am scum because I don't want to hand over my hard earned money to shiftless layabouts? I work hard and I pay taxes. What is left over is not very much. On that, I have to support myself. Yet, I donate to causes I believe in, when I can.

Death Pimp is right. This woman has 5 kids. If she spends $80 per kid for Christmas, that is $400. She needs to save about $1 per day, for a year, to have this money. But most people don't have the discipline.

If this woman has 5 kids, she IS getting welfare in the form of the EIC. This is a welfare program in which those who do not have children pay tax subsidies to those who do. So, how can she pay for child care while working a crappy job? Child care is not cheap. How can she afford $1,000 per week for child care? Answer-she can't. Someone else is paying for it.

If you are not attempting to work, you should be on mandated birth control and lose your right to vote, if you want to receive welfare. Tie them together.

no where in this article does it say that Ms.Santee is on welfare, she could have one of those crap paying jobs and pay for child care. also, it does not say that her children have different fathers. perhaps she has been abandoned by a deadbeat dad, it happens. get off the bandwagon and quit being so judgemental. there are people in this world that are in need due to the economy. having so many children is a shame, but at least she did not abort!!! perhaps she is Catholic, no birth control!! I was once a single mother with two children with a deadbeat father, he did not support us when we were married, never got a penny of child support. I scrubbed toilets and cleaned other peoples crap until I got thru college and got a job to support my family. would not expect any Christian charity for you scumbags.
