Officers Familiar With Home Where Murder Took Place

BELLAIRE - Police had been to 4277 Harrison St. in the past, but Chief Michael Kovalyk never imagined his officers would respond there to find a man dead.
Eric Wheeler, 18, was killed in that home early Thursday morning after suffering a shotgun blast to the chest allegedly fired by 62-year-old Ronald Byard. Kovalyk said both men lived in the Harrison Street home, and the shooting followed a "domestic situation" involving Wheeler and a female at the residence.
Kovalyk said he could discuss little of the details in the investigation. He said he considers Wheeler's death a tragedy, but officers were not strangers to the home in which the man died.
"It's a tragedy when someone loses there life at such a young age regardless of the circumstances," Kovalyk said. "It wouldn't be proper to release anything further, and I wouldn't do so unless given the OK by the prosecutor.
"We have had numerous calls at that residence," the chief said of the death scene. "There were numerous disorderly and disturbance calls."
Police responded to the home at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Wheeler was found dead by Bellaire police officers responding to the scene. Byard was taken into custody at gunpoint. The weapon recovered was a 12-gauge, single-shot shotgun, according to the chief.
He said an arrest was made almost immediately after the shooting was reported.
"A minute later they arrived at the scene, and at 12:36 they had a suspect and a weapon secured," Kovalyk said. "The suspect came out on the porch, and he was ordered down at gun point."
Kovalyk said the officers called for an emergency medical squad and secured the area. The Belmont County coroner was called, and Wheeler was declared dead at the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation has been contacted by Bellaire police.
Byard was being held Thursday in the Belmont County jail on $20,000 bond on a charge of murder.

Remember the Strike Three Law? Well, the ABA was losing money so the laws became weaker and afforded lawyers more clients thus more money.

Some friend. Sounds like a clan from the Jerry Springer category. Obviously Eric Wheeler extended his welcome a bit too long at the Byard residence. A man's gotta know his limitations.

i think it was set so low becuse of the reasons behind the shooting. there must have been a reason and they felt he was no danger to anyone else. there will be a lot of details coming to the surface in coming days, week or months. i don't beleive the young adult needed to die. why didn't police take care of this before hand? if it was an ongoing problem then the 18 year old should have been removed from the house. court ordered not to return. better than death.

$20,000 dollar bond for a murder charge? That means for a $2000.00 bond fee this guy could be back on the street. Wonder why the bond was so low? Makes ya feel real safe, doesn't it???

The woman is not a teenager, she is 44 years old and she and Byard have an 8 year old child together. Read the article on WTRF's website it's all there. Mr. Wheeler was a friend of the family and living with them for about 2 months. No matter what happened, no one, and I mean no one should have lost their life, whether at a young age or not. This is a tragic story for all involved. My sympathies go out to Eric Wheeler's family and to the 8 year old child. Sad to say the least for all involved.

What a tragic story. 18 years old kid is dead and a 62 year old man look's as if he is ready to die himself. There is very much more to this story and please don't comdem Mr. Byard yet. I'd like to hear what the female at the residence has to say. Who reported the shooting? So what this story sounds like, two teenage kids, one boy and one girl, don't get along too well. The police are called numerous times in the past for domestic disputes. Sounds like Mr. Byard just may have saved this girls life. Anyhow, I wish the family and friend affected by this tragedy justice and closure.
