Unemployment Continues To Climb in the Ohio Valley

All local counties’ jobless rates now at 10 percent and above

By CASEY JUNKINS
POSTED: March 11, 2010

WHEELING - There are 29,600 more West Virginians out of work now than there were at this time last year, as the Mountain State's unemployment rate has reached 10.5 percent.

Despite having roughly 3,000 people now working at The Highlands, Ohio County's jobless rate is currently 10.1 percent, according to the latest statistics provided by Workforce West Virginia. Last year, the county's unemployment rate was only 6.7 percent.

In Wetzel County, the unemployment rate is now 16.8 percent, which is the second highest in the Mountain State, behind only Calhoun County. Wetzel County's jobless rate last year was 12 percent.

With most Severstal Wheeling plants still idled or working well below capacity - along with companies like Bayer MaterialScience and Ormet Corp. slowing operations in recent months - it is easy to see why many Northern Panhandle residents continue struggling to find work.

Ohio County residents filed 690 more jobless claims in January than they did in the same month in 2009. Commissioner Randy Wharton said the county could "create 200 jobs pretty quickly" if the West Virginia Development Office approves the county's application to issue $30 million more in Tax Increment Financing for The Highlands. To date, the development office has not yet approved the TIF application.

"More construction will get people working. ... More retailers will hire people who will be spending money in the community," Wharton said. "We have plenty of retailers ready to move in or expand their present operations."

Wetzel County residents filed 320 more unemployment claims this January than last. Commissioner Robert Gorby said county leaders are "doing all we can at our level."

"The (Marcellus) Shale natural gas drilling could eventually lead to some jobs for us. But until they get some gas piped out, it is probably not going to help too much," he said.

Commissioner Scott Lemley said attracting developers to Wetzel County is difficult because of its challenging geography and terrain.

He noted, however, that coal mining operations in the eastern portion of the county could soon expand.

"The largest employer is Wetzel County Schools. ... If we cannot keep other jobs here, people will have to leave. When they take their kids with them, we will have fewer kids in the schools," Lemley said.

Brooke County residents filed 610 more jobless claims this January, propelling the county's unemployment rate to 15.6 percent, up from 9.4 percent at the same time last year.

Residents in Marshall County filed 580 additional claims, leading that county's jobless rate to increase to 12.2 percent, up from 8.2 percent in January 2009.

Hancock County residents filed 690 more unemployment claims in January, allowing the county's jobless rate to accelerate to 15.4 percent, up from 9.8 percent the previous year.

In Tyler County, residents filed 70 more jobless claims, leading the county's jobless rate to jump from 11.8 percent last year to 13.8 percent.

cory1978 you and the others that think WV is a third world country because of environmental regulations are delusional. Stop trying to find a scapegoat and avoid the real issues.

Cory, exactly which natural resources are off limits to the State of WV? Are you speaking of resources literally closed off to development or are you referring to laws and regulations related to reducing environmental and human health impacts? If you travel the length and breath of WV you will see ample evidence of resource development, including mining, timber harvest, drilling for gas, farming, manufacturing, roads, buildings, dams, etc. Yes, there are requirements to prevent the poisoning of the water, air and food and to, hopefully, leave something for future generations.

There's no excuse for WV not to be booming especially the Wheeling area. We have one of the best airports in the entire world 45 minutes from us and one of the biggest, most well kept interstates in the world runs right through our city.

We're geographically right in the center of millions of people if you count Ohio, WV, and PA all 3, and we even have a large river. We are not out in the middle of nowhere like somewhere in the Dakota's or Wyoming.

If you look at other areas that are geographically placed like we are, we are probably the biggest underachiever out of all of them.

"I'd also add, drilling for oil anywhere in this country they can find it," Shark.

You could punch holes in every square yard of ground in the country, but the U.S. will never again be oil independent. The fact that oil remains under the ground does not make it economically viable. The U.S. was once the world's largest producer and exporter of oil, but we now depend for more than 60% of our oil on exports from other countries. Despite new exploratory and extraction technology the reality of geological limits cannot be reversed. Oil is currently $80 per barrel. If the economy shows any signs of revival the cost of oil will climb with it - and probably kick the legs out from under it again.

Ellis....I support most of your fine proposals but I agree with Gray about the abortion and also don't concur with decriminalizing drugs. That's o.k. though. I'd also add, drilling for oil anywhere in this country they can find it. More oil from our own land would help to correct many economic problems plus put a big-time squeeze on foreign suppliers.

Because many of these proposals make sense and would be effective, that is reason the politicians won't go for them. Solving problems will put elected hoodwinkers and scheisters out of business. Those people thrive on problems, chaos, disasters, crisis after crisis, discord among the people, and so on. You see what the good people of this great nation are up against. The only way for the people to take back control of the country is by implementing very strict and short term limits.

Hey Former..are you a EE?

Yo Boxerboy, the OC found Alcala GUILTY on all counts, phucker is going to death chamber. Now in the Ohio Valley he would probably get two years or a hand spank because he would be a cop or the cousin of the judge or the brother-in-law of the jury foreman or blah blah .

Ain’t no pretending here dude, you may have bought something I designed in the past and didn’t know it. Can you say the same for yourself?

Got a chip on your shoulder because all the hotshots from your school left town?

Yes uncommon the actual unemployment is much higher. And one day the W-P benefits will run out.Numerous small businesses depend on W-P.I do know who will be avaiable to shop at Highlands other than those working at Highlands.

Ellis,..#20 is a State's Rights Issue. If a State wants to be "Right to Work", that is up to the people of that State. The Fed has NO BUSINESS interfering in that issue.

The Feds intrude as unwelcome guests in too many State Issues already,..like with UN-FUNDED MANDATES! They have no place in the internal affairs of individusl States.

Former, oh, I get it. You're feeling a little defensive because of what I said about the unemployed being on this blog site all day. You want me to know that you have fast internet connections and you can do more than more than one thing at a time. You write code and blog for relaxation. I suppose this is doable but I'd hate to be paying for the code you put out, all full of rants and irrational strings. I don't doubt your intelligence.

Former, I'm impressed with your command of techno gibberish but don't discount the entire OV just because it didn't pay off for you. Who cares what yo pretend to do. Who asked you?

By the way, I see Huntington Beach's brilliant mass-murderer, Rodney Alcala, made the national news today on Inside edition. You must be very proud of your hometown marvel. Pervcenter, USA.

'truth', I've gone over this stuff before. I will not make excuses for Capitalism wether practiced by Demikrats OR Republicans. BTW, check Open Secret d o t c o m; ALL the Rich People in Congress ARE NOT Republicans, so get your head out of your a s s on that one!

Manufacturing left the USA due to EPA and Govt Regulations that strangled the life out of Manufacturing. The lack of wages and benefits paid to employees in turd world countries is just icing on the cake.

The cost of administering a manufacturing facility are staggering, not to mention all the administrative work and waste disposal costs that are a drain on company profitability. And it is obvious you have not a clue as to what it takes to run even a small facility, let alone a large one!

Do your homework. It aint all about Unions, wages and benefits. And those that think so are FOOLS.

Uncommon, don't be silly, you cannot BUY a cell phone, PC, DVD, or TV made in the USA.

Ford & Chevy build their full size trucks in Cananda, Dodge Ram in Mexico. The Toyota Tundra and Honda Accord have more "American" suppliers than a Ford Focus built in Mexico City. Clothes? China, Mexico, Phillipines, everywhere but here.

Other than fast food, what IS made in the USA today?

# 14: Build 50 or more nuclear plants.

# 15: Eliminate corporate taxes.

# 16: Tie the dollar to gold, silver or a basket of precious metals.

# 17: Term limits on Congress.

# 18: Break the two-party system, to include elimination of cross-filing and straight party ticket voting.

# 19: Harshly punish corruption in the public sector.

# 20: Make all states Right To Work.

# 21: Pass English as the official language.

# 22: Outlaw abortion except for rape or incest.

# 23: Decriminalize drugs.

# 24: Require voters to have been taxpayers for X quarters AND pass a basic test.

# 25: Pass a Constitutional amendment that limits government spending to population growth.

# 26: Create a national wealth fund. Pass a law that says this cannot be touched, except to invest in the markets. It can help to stimulate the economy while CREATING jobs and saving wealth for future generations.

These morons are still banking on the Highlands and retail jobs to save Wheeling along with WV...are you freakin' serious??? How dumb are these people?? This atate is the biggest, most complete JOKE ever.

The majority of people that run WV all need FIRED immediately. This state should be booming with jobs especially a city like Wheeling that already has the infrastructure in place. FIRE THEM ALL.
