4:47 P.M: Source Says Nailers Considering Johnstown

By SHAWN RINE, Sports Editor
POSTED: March 14, 2010

WHEELING -- A source out of Johnstown has confirmed that Wheeling Nailers ownership is considering at least a partial relocation of the team to Johnstown next season. The Chiefs will end ECHL play after this season and head to Greenville, S.C.

Wheeling Nailers co-President Jim Brooks declined comment "at this time."

For more on the story, pick up a Monday morning edition of The Intelligencer.

What started out as Thunderbirds hockey, which was a relatively inexpensive night out in a packed civic center full of excitement has taken several changes for the worse.

Tickets aren't nearly as reasonable anymore so it costs a small fortune to take your family to a game, internal BS politics within the boosters ruined that, there was all of the dishonesty (which was later admitted) that caused the re-naming of the team to the Nailers, and later the termination of beloved head coach Doug Sauder. When you go to a game now, attendance is in the crapper, the sound system *****, you can't hear what the announcer is saying and the music is so quiet that there's no energy or excitement. The last time I was at a game I actually saw people reading books in the stands between plays and between periods, as it was that boring and there was nothing to do or see to hold their attention. There are ads for WOMP-FM on the scoreboard. That station hasn't existed in 5 years! That shows neglect.

Maybe if the Civic Center would work WITH the Nailers instead of AGAINST them, it would at least be a start to keeping a professional sports team in Wheeling.

As a season ticket holder, I am disgusted with the state of the arena, especially considering the money spent in the recent remodeling. Beautiful restrooms were added on the second floor, but a few years later and we have YET to see HOT WATER....or even warm water for that matter. So much for good hygiene. The lights on the scoreboards haven't worked properly all season, the snow removal around the arena is something only a slip-and-fall attorney would appreciate, and the concessions are laughable.

This is a shame. I go to a handful of games each year. The bottom line is that the Civic Center is a dump. The sound system is beyond bad. I love hockey but minor league teams need to bring in people that don't love hockey but just want to be out. The Civic Center offers nothing to bring in the non fan for a night out. Taking the ice out of the CC will have a huge effect on youth hockey in the area. That *****.

Hello? The Patron Saint of Johnstown, Murtha is dead! The place will dry up in a couple of years as their Federal Government 'pork' goes away.

Just another example of a dying city. Maybe we could raise taxes, do a lengthy study, give incentives and keep the Nailers in Wheeling.

It will be a sad day if the Nailers really do move and the City of Wheeling has noone to blame but themselves... Close up shop there's nothing left downtown! Hopefully the Nailers will get some support in Johnstown.. or wherever they end up!

This is sad to see, as I really enjoyed Thunderbirds/Nailers hockey back in the day, but it's not great surprise, either. I went to a few games this past season. Both had more emplty seats than full ones, and there was just no life or energy in the place.

I'm surprised they took this long to move out of Wheeling.

Johnstown, like Clarksburg,is booming with defense contractors due to Murtha.Wheeling missed the boat.

Johnstown lost Murtha and gains the Nailers.

It looks like Johnstown got a good deal.
