Rebecca Goth believed the Wheeling area needed a health food store when she got the idea to open Life Savers at 1320 Market St.
But she did not realize just how many others felt the same way.
Loyal vegetarians, along with some curious carnivores, packed Goth's new Life Savers store for her Thursday grand opening celebration to enjoy some tofu and other meatless dishes.
"We've really been quite busy, especially for just the first day," Goth said.
"I think this is going to be a huge success."
Two of those on hand to try out the store on its first day were Moundsville residents Morgan and Pam Lacefield.
"This is definitely something this area needs," Pam Lacefield said.
"It is great to have something like this here," added Morgan Lacefield.
Goth stressed her location, situated on the east side of Market Street directly across from the WesBanco headquarters, is an asset.
"I had some people who work at WesBanco tell me that they have been watching me from their windows, waiting to see when I was going to open," she noted.
Goth said her tofu is processed in Spencer, W.Va., while her herbs, such as basil, oregano and mint, are grown in Wellsburg.
She also offers some hard to find products, such as sprouted grain bread.
"Eventually, I would like to have a little cafe where I could sell sandwiches and such," Goth added, noting she plans to grow her business as she goes along.
Though Goth currently has no plans for the building's upper floors, she said the structure's 6,000 square feet provide plenty of space for her operation.
Life Savers' hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
She will, however, offer special hours for special occasions.
"Whenever there is something going on at (Heritage) Port or (WesBanco) Arena, I am going to be open," Goth said.
